Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Fellow Forum Members,

If a radio and system have OTAR capabilities, will this feature allow you to change control channels over the air?

Thanks in advance.

OTAR is over the air Re-keying. As far as I am aware, this is only for encryption keys. The only over the air reprogramming that I know of is Pro-File on an EDACS system. I am not aware of a similar feature on a moto trunked system.

On a Motorola System there is Dynamic Regroup. You can reprogram over the air with it but only make 1 new talkgroup.

What exactly do you mean by "change control channels over the air"?

Did you mean to ask about:

Q354 OTACS (Over The Air Channel Steering)
Q353 OTACR (Over The Air Channel Reassignment)

rather than over the air rekeying?

you don't need OTAR to change control channels. This is why motorola has up to four CC programed in the radio. If the current CC is shut downr, another CC will come up and the radio will find it.

With Motorola Trunking there's nothing that can be done to change the programming of a trunked radio. Dynamic Regrouping basically inserts a TG ID into the regroup channel permitted the radio has one programmed in its channel list. Normally the TG ID for the regroup channel is zeroed out (if one affiliates with the regroup channel it sends zeros).

There's also the ability to soft program a failsoft freq for the regroup channel also, but I've never heard of it being used. FWIW

If it is a SmartZone system and the radio is programmed for SmartZone operation then the radio can get an updated control channel list for adjacent sub-systems from the current sub-system's control channel data stream.

If a SmartNet trunked system were to add a new control channel (up to four maximum) then it would require reprogramming of the entire fleet.

OTACS and OTACR are for conventional operation.
