Depot, cps, rss
Don't quote me on this but:
RSS is Radio Service Software
-Used by your local Moto Dealer
-Available for purchase by public
-Program one radio at a time
-Can clone one radio to another
-Program frequencies, talkgroups, etc.
-Can be use to tune & align a radio
CPS is Customer Programming Software
-All of the above, plus:
-Intended for system manager at your company/agency
-Can be purchased by public
-Can program the entire fleet over the air
-Also know as OTAR (Over the Air Reprogramming)
-Can be used to add features using Flashport
Depot is the Factory Repair Depot Software
-All the above plus:
-Not for sale to public, agencies, companies
-Allows for major firmware & software changes
-Used to reconfigure the radio after board-level changes
-Can force radio to go out of ranges and limits
-Can damage radio if used incorrectly
As with all software mentioned above, be careful using borrowed/loaned/unauthorized versions. Once you use a particular version, the radio can not be reprogrammed using an older version of software. If you screw something up and have to take the radio to your local Moto shop or if it has to sent to the factory repair depot, you can expect some questions about the presence of unauthorized software in the radio, sometimes not.
Kenwood and Icom make very solid commercial radios and their software can be purchased through a local dealer at a reasonable rate ($60).
