• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I've been demo-ing an SL 7550e, property of a radio shop trying to woo me.

I really like this radio! I'm considering getting one for personal use - it'd make a great replacement for my personal 7550 that I only really use for receive and portable operation of the system I manage, along with the most occasional uses of on the various amateur networks and local 70cm repeaters.

Unfortunately... it's MOTOTRBO only. Any recommendations for similarly sized radios that can do both analog and MOTOTRBO, or will I want to also get an SL 3500e to go with the 7550e (at which point, might as well get another 7550e.

Hytera PD-362. Not as full featured as the Motorola on DMR, but it does do analog. If the system you manage is trunked, though, you’re out of luck.

If you want a Motorola I would say get the SL3500. It is a nice radio 99 channels and discrete display. I think it will work just fine for your applications.

Does that mean channel pool+roam systems are out of the question?

I was looking at the SL 3500 as well - it's very nice, although I would appreciate a keypad to support the ability to wrangle contacts and receive messages.

It's really a shame a lower "class" radio can do analog whereas a higher class one can't. Alas...

The Hytera PD-362 doesn’t do roaming.

Understood about the SL7550. I’d probably own one if it did analog. I suspect they were worried about heat and battery life, so they omitted it.

Correct. That tiny cell phone battery wouldn't last 10 minutes in analog.

Actually - the batteries are interoperable. So you can put the larger battery in the SL 7550.
