• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

So I have been trying to find an APX 6000XE, 7000XE, or 8000XE, that has VHF so I can use it with my fire department, but literally every radio I come across seems to be missing tags with “legit” serial numbers. Why are almost all the APX radios on eBay missing tags? I am not trying to spend a fortune so an APX 6000Xe would be great.

I don't mean this to sound snarky but... It IS eBay or greed Bay or steal Bay, etc.... There are reputable sellers on there but just as many or more misrepresenting things and trying to sell trash as solid pieces of equipment. Ask for some recommendations from people on this board or others as to sellers. As has been said before, buy the seller, not the radio. Reputation goes a long way in this business.

Many of the Ebay and Facebook APX sales are of ALT ( accelerated Life Testing) Developmental or parts built radios and have been known to have come from the grey market. These radios should have never left the scrapper or recycler few have walked out the back door of Motorola. One seller in particular was selling these and having someone counterfeit labels.

Most today seem to come from Malaysia, Mexico, & a few from the USA. The rumor circulating around ham fests is they are made in Malaysia, & shipped to Moto in Chicago where "tags" are applied. It seems large quantities of these radios fall out the back door at the Malaysia plant, & never make it to Chicago, so no tags. While they are not missing from a hook, & ladder in NYC, or Chicago, they are still missing. As for no tags, but good serial #, I can only imagine someone is entering legit sounding serial numbers to the radio using Depot. But somewhere out there will be another radio that legitimately has the serial # in the "no tag radio". Imagine if the real one got stolen, & your radio has the same ser #, & the cops are running it . OOPS. But legit tagged 8000's are at $8000, & no tag ones are $3000-$4500.

I bet they also come from Hong Kong. I had a xts3000 years ago from there. Worked ok, I would not bet my life on it. But for simple scanning or just a desk radio. Eh. Why not.

I've bought a few eBay radios from Panter88 and have never been disappointed. They've all been rock solid good radios, and they never transmit outside a ham band.

Well how else can the plethora of radios on E-Bay be explained. They can’t all be ALT radios. Got a better explanation?

XTS and older could be surplus. APXs are probably parts-built.

Thank you all for that information! I messaged the seller who is selling the APX 6000XE on there and he told me it is a parts built radio. Probably not a good idea to use it for my fire department I would imagine. Also, any idea what a green APX 6000 XE VHF should run me? I really don’t need anything else just conventional VHF.

Why not just get an XTS5000 or even a XTS3000 if only conventional VHF is needed. Save your self a boat load of cash!
