• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey guys, I have a problem: I just bought a Motorola XTS3000 UHF, and I have it hooked up to my CPS (version R05.03.00). The problem is, when I try to read the radio, it will read for one second and say “communication with radio failed”. The strange thing is my radio will go into programming mode, displaying “1 CSQ” on the screen. Does anyone know what’s wrong here? I am using a serial to USB adapter and a RIB-less cable. Also, my radio’s firmware version is R07.71.00

I'm not exactly sure if this will do it for you, but the ribless cable, was it one that you would use for an XTS-5000 or was this an after-market?

I've had to use a RIB and cable for XTS-3000 radios, while the same computer and a ribless cable (Motorola version) would would be fine for XTS-5000 radios. If you have a RIB and the proper cable, try that.

Good luck.

It’s after market, but it’s not a XTS5000 cable. I think I narrowed it down to a broken cable.

I have tried using a USB to RS232 with a Ribless XTS3000 cable.I can never get it to work. Verified working with the same converter on an XTS5000 and others using the same computer and setup. I keep an old laptop with XP and a serial port just for those radios

I wish I could, but they are hard to come by. Like a said, I think it’s my cable being broken

Many of the Celeron J1900 based SBC’s gave serial ports on board. Worth the few hundred dollars you’ll fork out for one just to keep a programming desktop around IMO.

A couple of things. Astro Portable CPS is very picky about running on 64 bit versions of Windows (Astro 25 CPS is not). The only adapters I’ve had luck with (on 33 bit computers) are the TrippLite and IOGear (MSI recommended) USB adapters and BrainBox VX-001 Express Card adapter.

One other thing to keep in mind - I had to program some EFJ stuff years back. I had to get a USB to DB-9 Comm port emulator to do it. I bought a Radio Shack one, and it didn't work. I went to a computer store (that's how long ago this was...) and bought a Keyspan one and it did. Some of these things have different specs.

I hope you're on the right trail. Would love to hear what you found once you got it tracked down.

I have an IOGear and using win7 in 32 bit and it still gives me issues.. Not a big deal. I run a CF30 with XP just for older CPS..

I finally figured out what the problem is. It’s my Serial to USB adapter. It works fine with my Astro25 radios, but not with the older Astro radios. I don’t know why it’s like that. The reason I bought this cable is because my old one broke. So now I bought another one of my old cables, so I hope it works. Whatever happens, I’ll post on here the results.
