If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Edited cause I re-read your question. It may be a radio-computer issue.

Have you read/wrote to this radio before using the same setup? If it worked before, then something somewhere changed.

Remote mount CDM series are notorious for not being able to read/write. You can try reading it through the accessory port on the brick if you have the correct cable. Otherwise your other option is to put the radio back to a dash mount, reprogram and then put it back to a remote mount.

The short answer....remove the remote face plate from the brick, remove the head from the remote housing, attach the head to the radio brick. Be careful with the flex cable between the two. You don't want to damage it. Use care when separating the head from the housing and the remote face plate from the brick. If I remember correctly they snap into place. I don't recall any mechanical fasteners. I could be wrong though.

They just snap together, although there is an adapter ring that goes between the radio and the control head. It usually gets tossed when the radio is converted to remote head, though.

You can temporarily piece it back together to do the programming, if you need to.

As for the ribbon cable, there's a black dot on each end, that black dot needs to line up with the "0" on the circuit board end.

I agree, this sounds like it's having issues with the remote head set up, I've had it happen before. You can program the CDM series through the rear 20 pin connector, but building that cable might be harder than just putting the radio back together.

Even the stock RIB and stock cables do not always work on CDM's.

The OP has not said what cables and dammed RIB he is using.

Yes I am on the 29th revision RIB. It WILL program with a 100 foot cable, and does stubborn CDM's too.

When I had remote head CDM's in the field, I had built myself a rear connector programming cable. I never ran into issues doing programming from the remote head, but heard enough problem stories from doing it, I just did it from the rear. The trick was to get an actual 20 pin connector instead of the normal 16 pin connectors. I am doubting this is your issue, but might be something to consider moving forward.
