To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey guys,
I’m trying to get my Astro Spectra to go down to 139 MHz. It’s a 146-178 split model. Does anyone know the correct hex strings I should look for?

I did the hex mod to another Spectra that was a UHF split...are you sure I would need to align the radio?

I don't know. I read it as 136 at first so suppose it might. I haven't tried messing with a vhf like that. I guess the only way is to try.

I would start with taking it down to 144MHz and see if it works there. For FM in the Ham band that's all you really need. You'll know when you took it to far as soon as you key up. It won't hurt the radio but it won't transmit and may be partially deaf on receive. Have fun.

There are possibly several places you need to search and replace band edge HEX strings. The first are the advertised band edge like 146000000. That is easy. Then there is a soft band edge you will have to find experimentally. Though the advertised band edge is 146 MHz, you might find the CPS allows you to go down to 144 MHz. Check both TX and RX to see if you can make entries below the advertised band edge and record them. Those strings as well need to be found and replaced. It is same with UHF band edges.

As far as tuning, there can be some problems with TX modulation, VCO, Modulation fidelity and receiver band-pass because the factory tuning was restricted to as built band edge. 139 MHz is a big jump. Why not look for a radio with a Govt band split?
