TAC 92 is a really great example of poor frequency planning/management by the locals, and FCC.

155.475MHz has long been set-up nationwide as the National Law Enforcement Emergency Radio Network channel -- a simplex channel for LE interoperability. Interoperability has been the big buzzword that DHS, FCC and LEAs have been spouting over recent years (usually the locals spout it just to get funding from the feds, not because they really care about interoperability), but look what's done with the freq there in the Vegas area!

154.280 was & for the most part, still is, a fire/EMS channel across the nation. Here in Utah, 154.280 is the "State Fire" channel, programmed in to all VHF Fire/EMS radios & used for fireground, air/ground comms with medevac helos, etc.

The Utah state line is only about 100 miles from Henderson, and when TAC 92 is fired-up (I've heard occasional surveillances plus pretty extensive monthly FD-related comms checks on Tac-92's 154.280/156.7Hz output), it booms in quite well here.

One amazing bit of stupidity heard on it just a few months ago involved one of the big FDs in the Vegas area (can't remember if it was Henderson, Clark County or North LV) testing a whole bunch of radios on the Tac channels, meanwhile, Washington County Utah fire authorities had a mobile communications center established in the area of Central, Utah dealing with a complex of fires in that area, with good ol' 'State Fire' being the primary ops channel.

The agency in Nevada testing fire/EMS radios on the Tac channels would ask for a radio check on Tac-92 every 5 minutes or so, and the clueless fire dispatcher about 130 miles away in Central, Utah would dutifully respond to them each time, though since 154.280/Tac-92 there in Nevada was just a repeater output, they'd never acknowledge Utah hearing them loud & clear. This went on for at least an hour.

So I both laugh & cry when I hear DHS/FCC/Public Safety agencies talk about how important interoperable communications are, or give the usual stern warning about interference with critical public safety communications.

But of course, 700MHz LTE is the new salvation!

Hooligan - there is a new book that claims that no one in the USA works on the tough problems anymore - everyone keeps busy posing and sliding along. On the other hand - there are probably 6 million ways to build a bad radio system - but only 10 good ways.

TAC-92 has been busy today & occasionally over the past couple weeks with multi-agency LE training. Last time obammy was in-town, it was also used by area public safety involved with the motorcade.
