Before I moved to Las Vegas I routinely monitored using a BC780XLT. They (LA County Sheriff) were simple VHF. Worked great.
Here, I have to Open Sky debacle, rebanding, narrowband, and a host of other issues to consider.
I am not planning on purchasing anything new until the new LV Metro system is more solidified but if I were to buy today, it would be a BCD996XT or a Pro-197/GRE600.
As I see it, the pros of the Uniden, for me, are:
Single-DIN size. I have an available DIN slot in the truck if I want to install it there.
GPS capability. If I take it mobile this sounds like a great feature.
Been using Uniden scanners for years.
But I don't plan on taking the unit mobile.
On the Pro-197 side, from what I've read:
Better P25 audio
3.125kHz step size (is this important? Will it be important in the next 5-10 years?)
Is the GRE-600 discontinued? Is there about to be a new round of scanners released? Seem like it's about time...
