I'm visiting Las Vegas for a few days from Phoenix. Last night I quickly programmed all of the information from the database here (including all of the casinos). I noticed there was a 700 MHz OpenSky system listed for the Las Vegas Police Department. Is this system in use yet? My old conventional frequencies for the Las Vegas Police seem to still be working fine. It will be a shame when they move to that because I don't think there is any way to monitor an OpenSky system.

Nope, it isn't in use yet and no, you can't monitor an OpenSky system. All of the conventional VHF frequencies are still going strong.

That's too bad. In the Phoenix area all of the agencies are joining the Phoenix Regional Wireless Network, which is a Project 25 system (good for us scanner listeners with the right scanner). This gives good interoperability between any of the agencies in the Phoenix valley. I haven't heard of too many agencies going to OpenSky.

If they were worried about scanner listeners monitoring them and changed to OpenSky because of that, they could have easily accomplished the same thing in Project 25 with encryption. In Phoenix Police's case they were going to encrypt all of their radio communications but in the end decided to encrypt only the most sensitive communications after an outcry from scanner enthusiasts and journalists.

It's still interesting to listen to all of the other radio traffic in Las Vegas.
