I'm picking up radio traffic relative a wildland fire near Holbrook Junction that is threatening Topaz Ranch Estates. Type I and Type III engines left Mono County as far south as Crowley Lake enroute to this fire.
Meanwhile the Oak Fire north of Independence is burning well over 4,000 acres, and is just one of about 8 new starts in the area. It has crossed and caused the closure of U.S. 395. Two Type I structural protection strike teams have been requested from Mono County. The fish hatchery at Black Rock and the 8 Mile Ranch are threatened.
The number of vacancies in fire management in the natural resource agencies is critical, just in time for what could be described as a year with "epic" dryness. I'm not emblishing the story at all when I say this.
Hold on to your hats!
