The city is building out a new 700/800 trunked radio system and has already been granted licenses. They are in the process of identifying tower sites according to documents submitted to FCC. According to the same documents they intend on sharing the system and have interest from several surrounding municipalities who want to join in.

interesting that 1 of the sites for this newark city system is located in West Orange, on a 400 foot tower, on top of the 600 foot Mountain...EAGLE ROCK RESERVATION....1000 feet above sea level.. that should give Newark quite a large signal area...

One would think, with the fd and remcs already on njics, that the pd would follow suit ? .

Assuming Newark FD stays on the NJICS once Newark's TRS is completed............

That license was actually approved a while ago then dropped, revised, and regranted like twice. But last I heard they hadn't even gotten out of bids and paperwork yet. That was a while ago though admittedly.

They are still on a slow-growth plan - infrastructure not until mid-2020 & final acceptance not until later in 2021.

Wow, 14 frequencies on the system. You would have to think it would be more than just the police dept. eventually moving over to this new system.

Newark has been in need of a lot more frequencies for a long long time. Sharing channels has bogged down communications and is dangerous. They need another 10 channels for smooth operations. This new system has long been awaited.

Isn't the 7th opening sometime in the next year also?

Newark needs more channels then what they have now on UHF, but they do not need 28 Channels on a TRS , the West Orange NJICS site has only 26 and their are about 40 TGs for Essex county towns alone on the system

and as far the percent go all they are doing is dividing up current Precinct into new ones so the radio traffic is going to be no more then what they have now. same amount of calls just more percent.

Remember a TRS is made to Handel a lot more channels than the amount of Frequencies it has.

I think you'd be surprised what Newark can do with that capacity. Yes, the 7th Pct, like the 6th, is just a reallocation of resources plus some new academy grads into a smaller designated area. However, just putting precincts on separate talkgroups and separate and secure talkgroups for detectives would solve a lot of issues like NPD155 pointed out.

It also permits capacity for Newark Fire to come over to a city owned system with better coverage (theoretically) within the city if they elected to. Plus capacity for the other 13 non-public safety city departments, including schools and housing. Plus future capacity for UHNJ EMS. Plus future capacity for interop with NJTransit Police and Metro SIU, who have coverage issues in Newark on the NJICS.

So look at it in a broader spectrum and it does make sense. The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is not adding dispatchers and keeping the civilian call takers.

The system will eventually host the PD, FD, EMS, OEM, and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

So to recap, yes, Newark FD will leave the NJICS once this system is complete.
