I was wondering if anyone here has had any success getting the BCD396XT and Garmin GPS18x (RS232 Output) to work together.

I am connecting them with a null modem adaptor and a gender changer. I also THINK that I have the settings correct. I am using 9600 Baud on both the scanner and the GPS unit.

I am able to see the output from the GPS unit using HyperTerminal. It looks something like this (GPS values changed):

$GPRMC,040534,A,3416.2238,N,08136.8295,W,000.0,010.4,220711,004.4,W*71
$GPGGA,040534,3416.2238,N,08136.8295,W,1,07,1.0,280.9,M,-32.3,M,,*7F
$GPGSA,A,3,04,05,10,12,25,26,29,,,,,,2.1,1.0,1.8*32
$GPGSV,3,1,11,04,20,075,22,05,87,251,36,10,36,044,33,12,39,235,28*75
$GPGSV,3,2,11,25,33,281,30,26,19,158,25,29,26,316,33,02,58,034,00*73
$GPGSV,3,3,11,13,05,035,00,15,02,186,00,17,01,132,00*46

It repeats this every second.

Can anyone help guide me in the right direction. I don't really know where to start troubleshooting this. It SEEMS that everything is in order but I just cant get the scanner to recognize the GPS.

4800 Baud didnt do it either. Not sure where I'm effing it up...

I'm not sure why you have a null modem AND a gender changer. I've got the 18x hooked to a DB9 M/M null modem adapter, plugged into a Y-splitter (1F, 2M) and then to both a 396XT and a 346XT using the cables that came with them. Both radios are set to 4800 baud. Works great.

Thanks jonesy. Your question prompted me to try and make my own m/ m null modem cable and it worked. The f/m I was using needed a gender changer to work but I guess something was wrong with it. Here's a picture of my diy null modem cable

I've been wondering for a while if I could get my 996xt and my kenwood 710 to work off of one gps. I think I'm going to give it a try this weekend! Did you DIY the Y splitter?
