Hello, I am new to the forums. I need help scanning my local police radio if anyone will bother teaching me how. I've read the wiki and stickies but I am still not sure on how to go about.

My local radio is Dobbs Ferry, New York in the Westchester County.

What will I need to purchase and do to begin scanning.

For curious folks, I enjoy obscure hobbies.

You know, just to get you started one of the Home Patrol models might be the best choice. You can enter in your ZIP code, set a distance range, select the types of things you want to listen to, and the scanner will start scanning your local public safety radio systems. After doing that for a while if you find you really like the monitoring hobby, you can begin to really customize what your radio scans. Beyond that there are a whole host of ways to expand your horizons, with better antennas, better radios, computer programming, etc, etc. But the Home Patrols would be a good place to start.

Pretty sure the HP1 and 996XT do NOT decode APCO Phase 2 digital, but there may not be much Phase 2 in the OPs area at the moment anyway. The HP2 is probably the safest bet for ease of use and compatibility, but the HP1 would serve well to at least get the OP started.

Westchester has an analog UHF trunk system. No PD on it, just FD and some bus and county services. From what I see in the database, is that your city has analog and P-25 conventional frequencies. No need for any Phase II scanners.
Any scanner such as the Whistler/RS scanners: Pro-106/651, WS-1040/1065, and Uniden BCD-396XT.
Look in the RR For Sale forum for some inexpensive older/newer P-25 Phase I scanners.
