After looking at programming favorites lists into the Uniden scanners (any of the HP series) they are much harder to custom program compared to the RadioShack 651,652,668 or the Whistler 1080 or 1095 . I like the removable faceplate on the 1095 . I have the RS668, Whistler 1080 & 1095 . The 2 whistlers are on my outside antenna at home and they are rocking with the FayettevillePD and The NCSHWP troops B,C and H all the time. I use my 668 when I am at work.

I am looking at scanners again, I don't want something that will be obsolete for awhile. I have 2 perfectly good analog trunk tracking scanners. Would it be best to invest in a scanner with Phase 2 capability? Is there any sign that Charlotte/Mecklenburg Police/Fire will be moving in that direction?

Are there any updates in reference to listen to Currituck or Dare County LE? I haven't kept up to date on this info. Just wanted to see if there had been any changes. I hate when a PD goes encrypted. Seems fishy like they're hiding something.

I don't believe there is one "best" scanner as homepatrolcc has proclaimed. I own both a Homepatrol1 and and a GRE PSR 500 and for me, at my particular location, with my particular setup the GRE outperforms the HP1 on VIPER.

As I said when I first wrote the post that started this thread, different conditions will produce different results for different people. It's almost a Pepsi vs. Coke argument, people have their biases and I figure some are even paid by the respective manufacturers to push products here on the forums.

I'd say that any digital scanner you purchase will be adequate to receive what you are wanting to receive as long as you purchase a modern digiital trunking scanner. You should be able to get a Uniden HP1, HP2, BCD436HP, BCD536HP,BCD396XT, or BCD996XT, or a Whistler WS1040, WS1065, WS1080, or WS1095 and be just fine for what you want to do with it for western NC.

With p25 phase 2 starting to grow if I were going to invest I would look at a phase 2 capable scanner

I would consider the 486HP with the gps attached to it , that way it will change locations with you as you drive .

I spent a lot of money on different scanner and antennas and aluminum foil to find that simulcast is a pain.
Decided to try the Unication G4/G5 pager
it hasnt arrived yet but they say its EXCELLENT for P25 Simulcast systems

I'd be curious to know your results with the Unication G4/G5 in NC. All the major city/county systems (Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Winston-Salem) are Motorola SmartZone, which apparently the Unication pagers don't support. Is this correct? Does anyone have experience using the Unication pagers to monitor VIPER?

I can hear it all now , where before it was a garbled mess

Does anyone know whether there are scanners available now that can decode the NXDN NEXEDGE system that Columbus Co Public Safety is using ? Squad101 posted on 4/6/2015 that then there were no known scanners capable of decoding the system. Anything new since then ?
As always, thanks for your replies !

Whistler makes scanners that can do both DMR and NXDN, and there is no separate fee.
