I was looking at my local counties talkgroups and frequencies. I saw that they were mostly analog talkgroups. I was looking at another county's list of talkgroups and frequencies and saw that they were digital talkgroups. So here is my real question:

What is the difference in an "analog talkgroup" and a "digital talkgroup"? Also please explain how they both work. Thanks!

You can use a analog trunking scanner to hear analog talkgroups, and you need a digital scanner to hear the digital talkgroups.A digital trunking will hear both. A analog one will not.
How a digital talkgroup works could fill a book.

If you look at this article it will give you a basic explanation. Is this what you are looking for? If not, feel free to ask. Also, look in the WIKI on this site (Radioreference) for articles on specific model scanners, and more in depth information on what you want to listen to.

A good starting place on this site is here. http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Category:Trunking_Scanners

Hope this gets you started. Its not too complicated once you get started. There are plenty of people on RR to help.
