CLYDE -- People living near and in Clyde have been evacuated as an orange-colored cloud moved toward them. The incident began with a release of what Sandusky County Sheriff David Gangwar said was nitrogen dioxide at a toxic waste facility near Vickery, Ohio.
Nitrogen dioxide can cause acute respiratory distress. It is a reactive gas that contains nitrogen and oxygen. The gas forms primarily from burning fuel in motor vehicles, electric power plants, and other industrial, commercial, and residential sources that burn fuel
The incident took place at a deep well injection chemical waste facility called Vickery Environmental, Inc., which is owned by Waste Management.
Agencies on the scene include the EPA, the Townsend Fire Department, and the Sandusky County Sheriff's Department -- including the Sheriff himself and his chief deputy. The Health Department is also on the scene, and Hazmat crews have been alerted..
Officials are meeting to determine if the Ohio Turnpike and State Route 419 in the area should be closed to traffic.
