Civil Air Patrol Frequencies

A few weeks ago I started asking about some airplane comm I picked up in the B'ville area. It turned out to most likely be Civil Air Patrol. Several people on the forum already knew about them.

Well, I started looking around for more info on these guys and it turns out they do a lot of stuff. I looked up an old friend from high school who used to be in CAP and he told me they have a lot of frequencies they use now and that there are going to be a lot more sometime soon. I asked him to get me a list if he could and he finally did.

He says not all of these are in use yet so you may not hear anything on them. He says they are most active on weekends or when an airplane comes up missing somewhere. Heres the list.

I notice on the Lafayette, La. trunk system the Civil Air Patrol also has
a TGID on their system. And on the Louisiana State system out of Lake Charles also has a TGID. I believe it is used to communciate
with the Office of Emergency Preparedness in the event of a natural
disaster. I too was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and it is very,very
fine organization to belong too. I learned a lot and it taught me a lot
about discipline too. I had fun going on the field trips to the various
bases and going to the one week drill during the summer.

2007 may be the most demanding year in the history of CAP for the organization's Communications program.
During the summer of 2007, every VHF-FM radio frequency used by CAP will be changed by order of the federal
government, requiring changing out of every VHF “repeater” used by CAP and reprogramming of every corporate
and member-owned radio used on the “CAP frequencies.”
CAP's radio communications are regulated by the National Telecommunications Information Administration
(NTIA), as opposed to civilian frequencies which are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission.
During 2007, CAP will be implementing new technical standards required by the NTIA and the Air Force. Among
the changes mandated by the new standards will be operation on new “narrow band” frequencies, meaning
physically changing the hardware of every VHF radio repeater used by CAP, nationwide, including 75 in North
Central Region.

Does anyone have a map of where all the CAP repeaters are? Are they usually in most metro cities? I live in OKC and I was wondering if there is one here.

My buddy doesn't know any more than that. He didn't say anything about changing radios. He was just talking about new frequencies. I wonder how you get in line for the old radios.

A lot of CAP members used modded ham radios for their personal CAP radio. Now that there are no amateur radios approved for use on CAP freqs, the members will likely be selling them. But you'll have to watch the ads.

Pior to 2001 the information was readily available from the CAP web site.

Now it's pretty much up to us Scannist to SEARCH and Confirm the new channels as they come on-line. 138-144, 148-150.7 Mhz is the place to search :twisted: Many Wings run NETS anywhere from 1800-2100 local [top or bottom of the hour]

Yep, finding the CAP freqs is nothing. Ad nauseum practice and ELT (emergency locator transmitter) hunting on 121.500 MHZ

They serve their purpose, pretty lame for the most part?

I pick up two CAP nets in North Texas on 148.150. One is in the Dallas area, the other in Sherman/Denison . Up until now they have been on analog. Last week I picked up a P25 transmission on this frequency. Anyone else noticing this?

FYI when the young lady went missing from Edmond around Christmas the State of Oklahoma requested assistance and CAP launched two aircraft with crews to conduct an aerial search. Unfortunally she was found deceased by a passerby in her overturned vehicle.

That may be "lame" but if you or your family were lost or injured you would be grateful to look up and see that red while and blue C-182 circuling overhead.

OPSEC is just the reason that slowly people are changing to P25 with AES encryption. If you don't want something heard then don't let them hear it. The best way to keep a secret....don't tell anyone. The CAP is finally coming into the modern world but you are right about one thing, there is nothing secret about a Cessna, but then again its hard to find wreckage in heavy woods at 500 MPH. Considering that most of the radios used by CAP members were purchased with their own funds they do a pretty good job. Lots of private pilots owe their lives to them and they never got sent a bill for search and rescue efforts.
