I'm not a total newbie.
Quite some time ago I bought a yupiteru 7100. Nice kit.
so...life changed and it sat in a drawer for a decade.
In the meantime the world changed.
I used to like listening to the cops.
so can someone fill me in on life these days?
I"m in Niagara.
I know that many things are now encrypted.
I've heard of p25 radios.
We had some fire/ems on Broadcastify until recently.
Apparently its gone.
What is legal/illegal to listen to or buy.
If you get a p25 radio can you get anything from the encrypted sites?
Any help appreciated and if this is in an faq i'm sorry but I haven't seen it.
thanks.

As Saint said Niagara police are encrypted and cant be heard on any scanner.

I believe you can still hear Fire on a P25 radio... and ems is analog on Bell Fleetnet system.

If you get a P25 scanner you will be able to hear fire and ems as well as Buffalo Police P25 Sherriff and fire
You will also be able to hear OPP for the QEW/403 and into Brant County.

for your region only police you would be able to listen to is the opp in which most ops channels is open and you will need a digital scanner that is able to pick up p25 vhf trunking which is most if not all on the current market which is legal to buy. If you get a p25 radio you will still not be able to listen to anything that is encrypted unless you have the encryption key and good chance they will not give that out to anyone and scanners don't have a option to program a encryption key in

You can make do with a decent scanner. Pretty much all of us can't monitor the police anymore but you can monitor the OPP with a digital scanner.

If u have a decent antenna you will be able to pick up Toronto, Brant, Norfolk, Halton and Peel.
And the Niagara/Buffalo region.

Air stuff, the MTO. Even some of the conventional OPP stuff has activity, pm me for more info if u would like

But you will need a digital scanner and they can be pricey. But the members here often sell or trade scanners all the time.

Pm me for more info?

It's been some time since I've listened in on Halton Regional Police, Burlington Fire & EMS.
What type of scanner do I need to upgrade too. To allow me to get back into listening again. Much appreciated..

You wont be able to listen to Halton Police... they are encrypted
You can hear Halton Fire on a P25/digital scanner and ems on any analog vhf trunking scanner (digital scanners are analog as well).
A digital scanner will also get OPP for the QEW/403 etc

As you can see from my profile I live in Burlington. Even w/o the police to listen to there is a good deal of stuff going on.

As Toronto Kris said, you would need a P25 scanner and that will give you access to the OPP. You will be able to monitor them from Toronto to the Waterloo Region.

With a good antenna you can even do better, all the way to Durham Region to Wellington, to Middlesex.

EMS services are extremely busy. Fire slightly less so. Snow events have the MTO out in full force. Listen to the road crews as they react poorly to weather and see why the roads are in such poor shape.

I have enough scanners to provide me with entertainment. And while police monitoring was interesting how many times can you listen to domestic family issues. Frankly, listening to the misery and poverty of others is draiNing anyways. Let the police conduct their affairs in private.
