Just bought a new WS1040 Today and the signal strength only shows 2 bars.I am able to receive radio transmissions that I would like to hear.is there a way to improve my signal strength? I really don't want the hassle of returning it for a new radio.I am using a radio shack 800 mzh antenna in the metro area
Thanks
Scott

Get closer to the transmitter or use an external antenna.

What are you monitoring? If a trunked system, perhaps the radio is locking onto the wrong (more distant) site for that system.

Is your signal quality good? If so then screw whatever the little icon displays? Even on professional radios, the RSSI meter isn't super useful.
Kinda of like that warranty on a box of brake pads... (Think the movie Tommy Boy)

I am having the same issue with my ws1040. Can you tell me what settings you had to change to get yours working?

Thanks
Don

I noticed one thing that differs from my old GRE / RS models: the default RSSI values for the S-meter differ quite a bit. I noticed it when re-reading Mark's awesome Easier-to-read manual web page...

1040 Default values:
Bar 1 190
Bar 2 230
Bar 3 260
Bar 4 290
Bar 5 320

In my old Pro106 and PSR 500, the values were
Bar 1 370
Bar 2 450
Bar 3 520
Bar 4 610
Bar 5 680

Marks great page had a recommendation of running 470/540/610/680/750 for these, but these values were for the older 106/500 etc.

Has anyone tweaked the values of their 1040, and do they differ significantly from Mark's recommendations? I tried Mark's values and naturally being a lot higher, the s-meter bars aren't even working.

So the Whistler isnt *just* a rehash after all. And for now, my on/off volume pot is nice and clean and not scratchy. Hope it stays that way.

Also, PSREdit500 has a button that automatically sets it correctly
for the WS1040/WS1065

Thank you for the details. I am new to the scanner world so please be patient. I have changed the RSSI Bar Thresholds to the below settings using Win500. How do I check the scanner to make sure the settings have changes? So far no change to the signal bars.
