• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I’m looking for ideas to mount an APX-7000/8000 in my car. Not full time, but there are times it would be better than just leaving it in the cup holder. I’m also thinking something that will get the antenna up closer to the window and not buried down in the center console. Like mounted on the dash.
I’m thinking a RAM Mount or similar that holds the radio without squeezing the buttons. And keeps the display visible.
Does anyone know of a RAM Mount or similar that is a good fit? They have the RAP-B-378-UN4 for handheld radios but it’s generic so I don’t know if it’s a good match.

I’m not neccisarily looking for a charger idea, and I know about the enhanced vehicle charger but it’s very $$$.

If you don’t care about IMPRES the standard Motorola travel charger (the one with the cigarette lighter) uses an AMPS mount, which is standard. Depending on your vehicle you can get vehicle specific bases to fit your vehicle from ProClip (proclipusa.com) Pro Fit (pro-fit-into.com) that will pair well with it, or RAM makes an AMPS adapter. It has a bungee to hold it in.

One of my vehicles I have a grab handle on the A-pillar so I took one of the bolts out and used the Ram mount motorcycle base which is basically used to put one of the ram balls on a flat surface in a spot where a bolt normally sits by simply replacing the bolt with a longer one. Keeps the antenna up by the windshield.

I use one of these. It's a glorified radio clip, but made of sturdy metal and keeps the portable window level for about as good as you'll get portable inside a vehicle RF performance wise sans an external antenna/or vehicle adapter.

The only problem with this is that the APX when in the holster (where the belt clip is) the display is facing in (towards the belt).
I know I saw an aftermarket holster that doesn’t cover the dipsplay, but I’m not sure it can be used facing either way and I think it was for the XE models. I’ll look again.

I'm aware, but in reality we shouldn't be looking at radio displays while driving. In Georgia, hands free law applies since July 1st, and while two way radios are exempt, the last thing one would want to be involved in is an MVA where someone gets hurt due to glancing at a radio display.

FWIW, I know my folks and can generally tell what talk group my radio is stopped on by who's talking.

This may or may not work for your application but I designed and make my own mount. I didn't want a charger and the mounting options are slim without. You can check it out on my website:

APeX Mount – All options for APX Radios – APeX Clip

You can mount it on the bottom, rear or both (if you can't decide).

I enjoy solving problems and would be happy to discuss something custom if you have an idea you want to try.
