That Ringo Ranger is doing a good job. I was curious how well one would work on low band.

Good catch. I don't think I have ever heard them on low band.

Thanks. I'll probably keep that recording for a while :)
The AR-6 Ringo Ranger is great on low band. I've got two at different heights and both out perform various dipoles.

kkn50, also check your PM's when you get a chance.

Are there certain time periods that Low Band seems to open up for you?

I can remember way back when in the 70's that low band would really open up in the afternoon around 2 PM or so and last until maybe 30 minutes before sunset for me. That gave me about 4 to 5 or more hours to tune the band and log distant stations from across the country as well as down south from the Mexico areas.
When skip was in each day, I'd get reception from east and west coast stations including stations not near a coastline in the inner states. As the sun would set in the east, I'd lose those stations and could follow reception across the county based on if the sun was still up or not in the area the transmissions were coming from.
I liked to listen to our state police but many times, that was impossible as stations out of Massachusetts would over power my states signals.
This was a real problem for our state police as they could also not hear their own dispatcher's.
I also used low band specific antennas as they worked so darn well.
I had tons of fun back in those days! I'd even skip the last class or two from high school so I could get home before the fun started. If only my parents or teachers knew the real reasons I was cutting class!

I haven't heard anything in 4 months. I was hearing a station in Maryland and Pennsylvania while driving my truck in Houston.i had a 48 inch whip antenna on the roof and heard them in the early morning and late afternoon.

Question for you trashman.. I pay attention and see that you complete searches in WFM. Are there known entities that commonly use that mode? (obviously there are), what step range do you set for those searches, would that be say, 25 KHz, 50, 100 KHz. I really like the idea, I just am not familiar with the proper step setting for that. I am starting on my rotation this morning back into V.H.F. low..

In scanners WFM is 200 kHz bandwidth for the FM broadcast band.
Military FM is only 36 kHz bandwidth (15 kHz deviation or less).
Older military radios that only cover 30-88 MHz have 25 kHz channel steps.
That is mostly what frequencies are assigned and still used.

If that is what you are trying to receive then you will have better luck using FM and not NFM or WFM and 25 kHz steps.
