I understand your preference to use a Moto radio to scan a Moto system. Putting it simply, anything that we call a "scanner" is a turd, relatively speaking. Cheaply built, weak audio, looks and feels like a consumer grade TOY...which it is. I get that, I really do.
But the fact is that this is not the late 90s or early 2000s anymore. Back in those days if you had an unauthorized radio on the system you'd get your knuckles slapped with a ruler. These days it's likely to quickly escalate to a federal case due to the ongoing and worsening post-911 PARANOIA. It's FAR more dangerous to mess around with those systems today than it ever was at any time in the past.
As for the p25,ca thing, I will only state that I've seen that site and don't know much about it other than that. It does stand as an example of just how paranoid the federal government can be and how the bat wings carry an evil bloodsucking vampire that occasionally drinks the blood of people who actually LIKED bats and just wanted to know more about them. The less said about it the better.
To the OP, I'm telling you, the risks are not worth the rewards. If you MUST do this then you should switch platforms and attempt to procure a Harris P7300 or other P25 capable Harris product (Phase II optioned) instead. I say this because there is a fundamental difference: With the Harris radio, it has TRUE receive only functionality. Using a Harris radio I can SAFELY scan without ever worrying about it. The receive only check boxes actually work. The radio is comparatively cheap in terms of build quality and its audio quality is not on the level of an APX but it's decent.
The software related difficulties on the Harris side of the fence are comparable to the Motorola software issues. Nothing insurmountable.
One thing you said that concerned me is your statement that you want the real deal Motorola radio to show your friends. Well... WRONG. If you're in this to show off your toys, you're heading for disaster. It WILL get you in the (back) end. You need to adopt a quieter, stealthier approach. I can hear them, they don't know I'm listening, I'm not about to show my hand without any good reason. My secret. OPSEC and PERSEC rules apply. Outside from some discussion on this forum I don't say much about radios in the real world. I don't show them off except to other radio geeks like myself who would understand it.
