• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

There is some pretty good laptops on eBay that have a serial port that are running on win xp that are 32 bit. From what I gather the Astro cps will work on this machine?

What is the split of your radio? An "R" split , the fourth digit in the model number of the radio and your good to go, an "S" split may work. You should be able to go about 6-7mhz down below the frequency limit.

I'm just confused why more people don't just do a dual-boot install and not fool around with DOS boxes. It's easy to do, you end up using the software the way it was designed and you don't have to goof around with trying to make it work, because it just does.

I run it on my Toughbooks that run Windows 7. I'd say they are fairly modern. CF30

Dual boot Win 7 & DOS
When you turn it on, it goes to screen which asks which software to boot to. It times out after several seconds if you don't choose and boots to Windows. Set up my MRSS directory and away I go. Plus it makes it very easy to move files into the DOS partition using Windows, vs having to "copy c:" etc.

I had a Win 98 disk and the original DOS 6.22 disks from way back when. You can always use Free-DOS. There are a lot of tutorials on how to make it work, even if you already have Windows installed. I did that on one of mine so I wouldn't have to start from scratch.

My HP laptop died on Friday. Had ALL my programming software on it. I managed to recover all the install packages off the hard drive(thankfully it did not fail), and I am starting over with a clean Win7 64bit install on a CF-19 Centrino 2 @ 1.2Ghz w/ 3Gb of ram.

It’s a slow process, installing all my software from scratch but in the end I will have my programming computer back. Plus is that it has a real RS-232 port. I won’t have to use a USB<->Serial dongle anymore for any Vertex radios.

Unlike a lot of folks, all my USB cables have Prolific chipsets. I have never had any issues with Prolific. Ever. They just have worked for me.

I don’t mess with any radios that require DOS based RSS/software very often, and if I do, I have an old beat up, dual boot toughbook that has a pooched main battery and a dead CMOS battery that I can drag out to program Maxtrac/GM300 ectera.

Ok that makes more sense because I need a computer to run rss and one that has xp that will work with the Astro cps but if anyone confirms the Astro cps will work in a newer os like 7 or 10 I would only need 1 computer with dual boot
