152.180 has been around for my entire life so I just grew up assuming my radios were never any good because I could hear paging on frequencies I wasn't supposed to. But then I did some research and found the FCC letters against SMF and realized it was them, not me. The same guy who knowingly pollutes the airwaves also has no problem encrypting an entire county that is almost 100% volunteer...surprise surprise.

Lebanon makes sense if you heard it on Truce. If I recall the Wiki page correctly, there is no stockpile 5 in Dauco.

Dauphin stockpiles are numbered 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14.

Lancaster stockpiles: 4, 5, 8, 11, 13, 15, 16, 18, 22, 23.

Lebanon stockpiles: 4, 5, 7, 8, 9.

Has anybody confirmed with their eyes what radios Penndot is using? I get it that they don't necessarily receive training on how to talk into a radio BUT they sound atrocious. When FD or PD screams into their APX (or even XTS), it doesn't sound bad at all. But these guys......

I think radio maintenance should reconsider their audio profiles for Penndot.

I saw a Kenwood NX mobile but not sure if that's right considering I've seen them affilliate on VHF and 800 and to my knowledge the Kenwood can't roam band to band when trunking.

Authorized mobiles on the system include:

Motorola APX 4500, 6500, 8500
Kenwood Viking VM900, VM5730
Must have been a VM5730 I saw, but still scratching my head about the 800 affiliations I've seen, unless they have trucks also using VM900 somewhere. I only saw one truck briefly so...

It is possible more radios have been approved for use on the system since I saw a list. I was told they would be reviewing other equipment.

I have received short transmissions over the last week or so in ID Search mode set on the Washington County Claysville site from talkgroups 11456, 11477, 11728, 11729,11732 and 11733. I am trying to pinpoint locations but no luck so far.

I've discovered that those TG's that have flaggers directing traffic are generally directly related to the closest stockpile to the location in question, Sometimes you'll hear a Road/Landmark/Exit or other clues as to the exact whereabouts.. Or go for a drive and see where they're working. I think you can find current work locations on the internet as well... (Not sure of the site though)

The whole TG list is found here.. Pennsylvania Statewide Radio Network (PA-STARNet) Talkgroup Research - The RadioReference Wiki
The Stockpiles are found here (but it's a work in progress) Pennsylvania Statewide Radio Network (PA-STARNet) PA Dept of Transportation Talkgroup Research - The RadioReference Wiki

Would it make sense to separate each PennDOT district like other states do on Radio Reference?

I believe it will eventually when the entire state is rolled out (statewide). We know that is what the plan is but from what I was told the data base cannot have the different Troops,Dot Counties until the system is built out complete. I basically asked the same question.

I believe TG 1 is a wide area talkgroup, potentially statewide. Going through the recordings, I hear Penndot guys complaining about hearing people from all around the state on this TG. It even led to some OTA fights, one is on display in the recordings below.

They want to get flaggers off TG 1 and onto a flagging channel. One guy even explained how to go direct by pushing the off network circular button in the bottom left of the radio. One guy says that pressing the off network button on his portable takes him to MURS channels. So I guess Penndot wants flagging ops to be on MURS when possible.

I envision it saying "statewide" on their radios and they probably just assume it's the "statewide" radio system instead of a statewide channel. At one point they were all asking each other where they were working once things calmed down. I'm curious if anybody is hearing these transmissions on other sites across the state?

I have only monitored this talkgroup in the Harrisburg area, never heard it to the east.

I've heard only short mostly incoherent comms on TG 1 from 1.65 Truce never a full conversation, Usually somebody calling for another unit followed by no reply (because the caller isn't on the right CH)

They better not be using MURS, those radios aren't type accepted for it. Not unheard of though, my county programmed everyone's radios from portable up to 110W mobiles with a MURS channel because that's what the county Fire Police unit was using.
