Are departments and sites quick keys one and the same are are they different? In other words can they be numbered in the same directory as the department quick key is 0 and right under it is listed the site key, can the site key be numbered 0 too? Or does the site keys have to be in chronogical order where the departments left off and where the site keys continue on? Hope this makes sense.

Sites and departments are different subcomponents of trunked Systems. Sites group frequencies transmitted from a location, and Departments group talkgroups.

Site frequencies are what get scanned, not talkgroups. You can have thousands of talkgroups programmed, and it has no effect on scan speed. But you should only scan sites within reception range, either with Location Control or manually turning off distant sites. Scanning too many sites will bog things down.
It's not a good idea to give a Site and a Department the same Quick Key.

DQKs are for departments and sites. If you want to be able to turn off a department and a site with one key, yes you can assign the same key to both but it's something you probably won't want to do.
DQKs don't have to be assigned in order but should be assigned so you can remember them.
And, if you are always going to scan a department or site in a system, you don't need to assign a key to it at all.

How can you tell the status of all DQK's for a system on a BCD536HP?
The 536 only displays favorites list and system quick keys on the scanner screen. While scanning a single system, pressing the .NO button twice and then 0 will display the status of department/site quick keys 0 thru 9. You can make a change by pressing the quick key number and then E. To exit without change, press AVOID. Using the same procedure, pressing .NO twice and 1, will display the status of department/site quick keys 10 thru 19 and so on.

Thanks for the help. Yeah, the SDS100/200 shows it on the display, but not the x36HP.
