So I noticed in the last two weeks, when Norwich has a incident, some officers are on other talk groups calling HQ but I never hear HQ answer, I dont know if their portables are changing channels accidently or intentionally.

probably encryption. You have the encryption 1/2 locked out of your scanner and you are receiving the other side of conversation in the clear. See the post above about diff TG found in February that may be encrypted.

Doesn't matter where your antenna is. You have to be able to pick up the troop E site from the system. You'll hear everything if you do. If you only monitor from the K site you won't hear them all the time.

I have all of troop E frequencies in my radio
Plus 853.9125. And I have all the bars up on my 996p2. Without the 853.9125. I don’t pick them up good. Same as my brother who lives a mile away.

This newer radio system can be complicated to listen to and confusing. I'm in no way a technical expert either which doesn't help. What works better for me and my scanner may not work better for somebody else. All I know is the way that works best for me is to have each site programmed in its own separate bank. I am able to pick up the K site much better than the E site, which due to my location makes no sense but that's another story. You won't hear everything from the 853.912 control channel because you'll only hear it from there if their radios are going through that site, which they don't full time like they do on the E site. So if you can pick up the K site better than the E site like myself, which is what it seems like, you won't hear Norwich all the time. Confused yet? Lol

"coolrich55", THANK YOU for helping me to try and understand these radio systems. What you say above helps to explain why I can pick up the Norwich police better at some places than others. Even within the same city or town.

I am NOT at all ashamed to admit that this is so over my head from when it was a simple task to just punch in "39.90 - enter", into my older scanners just one or two years ago.

Without changing anything these days, sometimes I get the NPD okay and other times not good at all.

Of course the latest word is that the fire dept might be going to this system as well.

Then I ask myself, what if the NPD goes encrypt. Then I won't hear anything anyway.

But "coolrich55", thank you. Apparently hearing this dept is basically a roll of the dice, depending on where you are located, what channels they talk on, or what site works best in each individual case.

Confused still - Yes. But THANKFUL for the way you presented it here.

To make it even worse for me is that from the E site, which has 700 and 800 frequencies, I receive the control channel fine which is 700 something but the 800 voice frequencies not very well. It's enough to drive you crazy when you don't have the perfect setup.

Thanks for the different replies. This journey has been enjoyable, frustrating, and confusing. I have my scanner set to search all talkgrounds on Tropp E & K channels. My vehicle has all main control channels for the central and eastern state (E,K,C,D,F, & H) as when I drive I catch alot of different agencies. well at least thats what I think it does. I get everything from local PD's, CSP, ENCONN PD, Marine, Haz-Mat, fire coodinators, bus drivers (I lock those guys out) then I get the talkgrounds that jump radio towers and come up as 65xxxx channels. Middletown fire has come up alot lately. We have a meeting this week to discuss whether the 800 system will be a good solution for Norwich. That would add Fire, Public works, Board and ed and I think the parking commission, I'm not 100% sold on it but I'm going in with an open mind and I have questions< alot of them! we will see

This is WAY BEYOND MY LEVEL. But it's nice to know that I am NOT alone in that feeling.

For me it's like going to the casino. Roll the dice and see if your lucky numbers come up.

Wil it be;
773.9312
853.9125
or any other one of those numbers to be able to hear the Norwich Police.

I have left my scanner tuned to the Norwich Police ONLY. I could go hours without hearing anything.

Then there is the quality of the sound to deal with. It changes from good, to Not so good, to No good.

I'm glad that we have cell phones and computers these days. I ask myself, how did we ever do it before without them. But programing scanners and listening I just wish it never changed.

I sure do wish we went back to those much simpler days of operating a scanner. It was great and I could pick up places, even 50 miles away loud and clear.

I guess being an old man isn't really so bad these days.
At least I got about 50-60 great years of listening on my simple scanner throughout various cities and counties. Even when I traveled throughout the country.
It was great fun and so easy to program in dozens of channels along the way.

This was in the Norwich bulletin. " The new system, which also added antenna equipment to a smokestack located at the Wheelabrator waste-to-energy plant in Lisbon, allows Norwich police to communicate with state police, all troop barracks, several neighboring police departments, both tribal nations’ departments and gives the city’s officers access to any other agencies connected to the state’s core network." The story was also about how Plainfield PD is planning on joining the system. I hadn't known that there was a site in Lisbon. I'm located right in the middle between Lisbon and Plainfield. I receive the K site at full power but can hardly get a signal from the E site. I would guess that antenna in Lisbon is part of the E sites but I guess it's pointed in the wrong direction for me. I can't pick up the D site either so when Plainfield switches over I may lose them unfortunately. I know that the bottom line is I need to upgrade my equipment.

From what I understand the Lisbon site was receive only. The Troop E simulcast is from sites listed under WQYA371.

"imonitorit", I appreciate that. Thank you.

I know that "georged4997" has mentioned that in the past as we did our best to tune in the NPD.

Those days sure were fun. I miss them too. Being able to hear Westfield MA PD on 155.19 better than radio stations out of Springfield. I had received them both in Bridgeport and in Albany, NY. Then they went to 800 (analog first, digital) and a simulcast system, that was the end of that.
Occasionally you still run across a few that are still flamethrowers, like Hartford Fire's 154.31 or Winstead PD's 155.565.

What frequencies are Norwich PD using these days? I'm not sure if I have the right ones as I haven't heard them in a long time. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Dan. I hear them now. I found out that I programed my scanner wrong. Now I have to go through everything and hopefully see what else I messed up. Been a listener for over 30 years but I'm new to this trunked system stuff.
