• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Currently have a APX 1500 7/800 band hooked into a base station speaker, looking to expand from our radio room into other rooms in our building. Looking for the best way to do this.

No just looking to only transmit from the radio in the radio room, receive everywhere else including that radio room.

Connecting a public address system to the accessory connector is not difficult. The one caveat is you'll only get receive audio, not local microphone audio. If you don't use the microphone on the base radio often it may not be a big deal.

Fixed level receive audio can be found on the accessory connector on pin 21, ground on pin 14.

If you need both receive & transmit audio the preferred method is to use a remote mount head & the HKN6187 cable kit which provides a record out port programmable for RX, TX or RX+TX audio out. A consolette would work too. Unfortunately the APX1500 is dash mount only so you would be looking at replacing the radio.

If a replacement radio is not in the budget & you need both receive and transmit audio piped to the PA system I've used the CPI DTP1 panel as a public address system interface. When the desk microphone is wired to the rear of the DTP1 receive audio and mic audio is summed and sent down a 2 wire 600 ohm balanced line. A bonus is you can add DC remotes later if you want the ability to transmit from other locations in the building.

Only looking to receive the traffic. we currently dont have a PA system in the station as of yet. wasnt sure if there was an easy way to wire in speakers to the rooms needed. Also looking on how to go about taping into those pins and what we would need to be able to have all the speakers working. if we had to we would just leave the audio based off of what comes out from the radio, but controlling it room to room is a bonus as well.

You will need to add pins to the existing accessory connector, don't "cut off" anything. You would also need the proper crimp tool to attach the pins to wire.

I usually specify Bogen or TOA public address amplifiers for fire stations.
hate To be that guy I’m only familiar with wiring lights and some electronics together, but take the wires specified add the pins and run them to the input side of an amplifier, then the outputs with variable volume control for the speakers to each room, and is there a specific system you’d recommend to install between 4-6 speakers.

That's the normal way to do it. Do yourself a favor & use a 70 volt PA amplifier and volume controls. Using multiple 4 or 8 ohm speakers gets messy.

The audio from the radio is low level & unbalanced so keep the length between the APX and the amp input short to prevent hum, a few feet at most.

Here's probably your best option for interfacing to the APX radio: Accessory Cable for Motorola XTL Mobiles - Full Pinout XTL1500 XTL2500 XTL5000 | eBay they have done all the work for you, just attach the RX audio & ground wires to your PA amplifier input, tape up the unused wires. Another option is https://northcommtechnologies.com/products/motorola-apx-xtl-series-kit

For 4-6 speaker a Bogen C35 amplifier is probably OK, add some wall mounted volume controls with wall or ceiling speakers, speakers are also available with built in volume controls. Knowing more about the size of each room & background noise levels would be beneficial to select the exact equipment.

Read the Bogen design guide for more ideas: https://www.bogen.com/sites/default/files/2021-02/SysDsgn.pdf Also Bogen provides a free design service, send in a floorplan & details of your application and they will plan it out for you: https://www.bogen.com/free-design-service
