AR8000 AR8000 - 2VFO Problem

Hi All,

I want to use my good old AR8000 to stream my local fire/EMS. I'm having trouble getting the scanner to remember the frequency that I've placed in the 2FVO memory. I know how to put the freq in and monitor, but the scanner will not remember the freq if the scanner is powered off. I've scoured the manual, but I can't find the answer to this problem. I know this works cause I used it for streaming before.

Not sure how you are powering the AR8000, however whether it is with only batteries or thru the wall wart, you HAVE TO TURN the receiver off using the knob on top of the receiver. If it is powered only by the wall wart (with no batteries in the receiver) and you unplug the wall wart or turn off a power strip to the wall wart, the last changes to the VFO memories are not saved. Likewise pulling the batteries out without turning the receiver off with the top knob will cause the last changes to VFO to not be saved.

Also, if you have the step size wrong after programming a freq into the vfo and turn the AR8000 off while it is still plugged in or on batteries; the freq you programmed in will change to the closest step size that was set when you turn the scanner back on. As an example if you had 453.1 programmed into the vfo with the step size set to 25kHz, and you enter 453.1375 and you turn the scanner off without changing the step size to 12.5kHz; when you turn the scanner back on the freq in the vfo will revert back to 453.125. I have 2 - AR8000's; one to scan UHF milair freqs in, the other searches the satcom bands or I manually tune through the satcom band with open squelch in the USB mode which makes it easier to hear the data signals. Do you guys have full coverage (old cell band), and the single inversion descrambler chip? Our local hospital uses #3 on the descrambler chip for info on patients coming out of the emerg. room. There are a couple of businesses that use that type of encryption also. I have my two since 1995.

I never had my AR8000 "reprogrammed" or "upgraded" :) to open up the old cell phone band. For several years, I used to go to the Dayton Ham Festival and there was a fellow there that would reprogram it for you as long as you promised you weren't a federal agent, but I never had him perform his magic because at the time I had an ICOM R1 which was not blocked from the old cell phone range and just listened on that. Besides, it was a whole lot more fun to listen to the cordless phones that were deployed throughout my neighborhood in the 1990s on the AR8000. It was sensitive enough to give me 4 or 5 house range around my house.:) Also my AR8000 doesn't have the inversion descrambler chip.

Thanks, Richard, I noticed that happens but the agency comes in fine. I will have to go back to the manual and see how to change the step size in the 2VFO mode.

If you have CR8232 Unit or somebody has this, you can easy reprogram AR8000 US Bandplan. Otherwise, make Programming Socket for AR8000 (see video link below). Then follow list below to add Cellular frequency range.

US Bandplan Table shipped with later US AR8000 (S/N 209xx 5/95) and is comprised of 108 entries. These are listed below. This more recent table maps the AM Band correctly, among other things. The table below show you the entry offset, the EEPROM address, the 16 byte entry, followed by a semicolon and an annotation of the entry's contents.

Thanks for the info. I don't know anybody who has a CU8232 and the serial number on mine is 0207xx. I am not good at making and/or modifying electronic so I wouldn't even attempt the second method.

FWIW, I have 3 AR8200MK3 receivers that are unblocked so I can scan just about anything I want to that is analog. I use the AR8000 mostly for VHF Air monitoring. Originally I used it also for police and fire in the old days, but now almost everything near me that is police or fire is digital and most of it is encrypted and what isn't is mostly NXDN and P25.

To change the step size in 2vfo mode: In expert/newuser 2ndF mode - press func button -press #2 step button - turn top knob to select size - press ent. IF in expert/newuser func mode, you will have to hold in the func button while pressing the #2 step button.
