• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Does anyone use LED lights to illuminate your installs?

I have been trying to find examples of installs that use any form of LED lighting to give some illumination to your radio consoles.
A kind of a subdued light, almost like your dash lights'

I am not looking for a roof mount that lights up the whole cab but something that remains on or can be turned on that sits on or near the console to give it just enough light to see.

Does this make sense?

If anyone has done anything to help light up your consoles can you post an example.

Thanks,

Steve

I have seen that more in the stereo, mp3 car community. Often a nice mobile computer control head or stereo unit is lit with LED strips for ambiance or to set off the install. Mostly strip LED's from what I have sen though.
Often a different crowd with scanners and amateur radio, if lit up at all, it is with an ex cop car light or small incandescent task light on a flexible arm. Think Jotto console and black headed lamp goose necked over the radio.
Personally I have yet to add any lights to anything I have done though. Most have back lit buttons or the dome light is used when changing channels if more light is needed.

I don't know if it helps, but years ago I strung about 4 or 5 little Christmas lights in series and used them in the car, I don't remember why. Seems the ones I was using would take about 3V to light up. Maybe you got a wad of lights not worth untangling that you could cut up.

I'm not sure if you have an overhead console in your vehicle but my 2014 GMC Sierra has a single soft white led that shines down onto the center console from the overhead console. This led is not visible when sitting in the truck because it is countersunk into the hole. You really only notice the area is lit up but you cant tell where the light comes from. Maybe this is something that you could try.

I've had good luck with some bullet accent blue LED lights. The ones I got at AutoZone had lights attached to 12 vdc plug. Cut off the plug (keep track which lead is positive, the tip on the plug), connect to a 12 vdc source or into a line control by the dimmer switch. I even install one under the center console arm rest with a mercury switch so it comes on when the arm rest is lifted.

Bass Pro Shop has led light strips in their catalog. Used for trailers. Waterproof. Cut to fit.
