• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

How to get started and with what?

We live in Allentown PA. what would be the best kind of unit for us to purchase to listen to the standard Police and Emergency calls for our city? Does anyone know if their calls are even avaiable for screening?

We have had two killings within two blocks of us this past week and we are told there are now numerous gangs and drug territory fighting going on in our area. Last Sunday night we could hear the guns shots from our home and I passed some kid with a rifle and scope nearly as long as he was.

We would feel better if we were a little more aware of what and who is hanging up their wash out back anymore.

Many thanks for your thoughts,

Analog EDACS in Allentown

It looks as if a Radio Shack Pro97 would fit your needs as the EDACS system uses analog voice. You can check out the DB for Allentown EDACS here.

Several other freqs for your area are available in the DB here.

I'd say that your first step is to put your home on the market and start looking to live elsewhere!

Welcome to the forum.

NeFire has a great suggestion on the Pro-97 and it's currently on sale as indicated. This price is available at your local Radio Shack also. If you get programming cable (also available from the local store) 20-047 and Win97 software (25 bucks) and subscribe to this website ($7.50 for 90 days), you can suck the data from the pages listed by NeFire into the software, then transfer to the Pro-97 ready to scan.

However, I also jokingly agree with Tim.

I'm in the Allentown area as well. I just recently purchased the Pro-97 and it works great! I works really well with Tracking the EDACS system the city of Allentown uses. The system is pretty small, you could program it by hand and not worry about downloading and using software. Plus quite a few of the preprogramed freqs. are quite active in the area as well!

Good luck and stay safe!
