Okay, consider yourself corrected.

Note, you asked the question, CPU upgrade. You can't upgrade a CPU by a software/firmware patch. As to what it is for, it has been discussed endlessly.

Read the post 8 above yours. That should answer all your questions.

The CQPSK fix is a DSP upgrade which IS user performed. The CPU upgrade is only done at Fort Worth.

Default I shoulda left well enough alone

I went to the local RS store yesterday and they said Radio Shack is giving them a hard time about replacing the radio. They gave me mine back to try and use until they get a replacement.
There is no control of the squelch or volume, they are both wide open.
I tried to load a v folder and it locks up 1/2 way through.
I manually loaded a few frequencies but it won't scan because there is no control of the squelch.
I tried to load programing via win 96, can't write to the radio.
The startup info is
Version
CPU: F1.3
DSP-App: (blank)
DSP-Voc: (blank)

So the radio is basically junk. I could set it to monitor the weather.
I should have just left it alone with the older CPU.

I would call corporate HQ. It sounds like the NY service center tried to do a repair they weren't qualified for and broke the radio.

You should talk to the store where you left the scanner to be sent out. Since someone at Radio Shack broke your scanner, have them give you the district manager's number.

I was in a similar situation back in July to September of 2004 when I tried to get my Pro-96 upgraded and the rubber pad on the side replaced. It was initially sent to the wrong service center, then forwarded to the correct center. At that time, they were out of the CPU chips so I had to wait until new chips had arrived. Once they finished the upgrade and replaced the rubber grip, they sent me someone else's Pro-96 with a totally different serial number. The repair center at Ft. Worth eventually found my scanner and mailed it back to my local store with the upgrade/repair. Upon receiving it back and in less than 24 hours, the scanner failed to operate, no response whatsoever. I took it back to my local store, explained the whole situation and got the district manager's number. I talked to my district manager and he has my store manager pick up a new scanner from another store that already has the upgrade within days of my call. It was a fresh one from the factory, not a refurbished unit and you should get something similar for your problem.

You can also read about my situation regarding this at my website: www.radiobern.com/pro96.htm . I have also previously posted about this situation as it was happening then here.
