I have a file to upload to my 651 but I cannot do it until I get my cable Monday. I was wondering if someone could quickly describe the steps to program in Nova Scotia EHS manually so I have something to listen to over the long weekend. This is my first radioshack unit. And it's over my head. Used to doing and having it done on uniden models.

From the looks of it, you will need to program Maritime Trunked Radio. Hopefully having the Uniden has given you some idea of what some of the best sites are around you. Otherwise, you can take a look at the RR Locations Site Map to see what might be near you.

Taking a look at Easier to Read Pro-651/652/106/197 - WS1040/1065 - PSR 500/600 Digital Scanner Manual: Creating (Programming) Objects will be helpful in understanding what is going on.

Once you have your site(s) selected, note down the primary control channel (red, c) and alternate control channel (blue, a) frequencies.

Now we get to the fun part of programming the unit. When programming from scratch, you should do the following:

  1. PGM > F2 (NEW) > F1 (TGRP)
  2. Scan Lists: > Assign the TGRP to any scan list
    • SEL/ENT to toggle whether it is assigned or not.
    • Left/Right arrow to change Scan Lists
    • * (asterisk) indicates that it is assigned to the list.
  3. TSYS: NEW > SEL/ENT
  4. Type: P25 AUTO using the Left/Right arrows
  5. Tag: > SEL/ENT to edit
    • This is for your Trunked System.
    • See ETRM: Text Tagging and Qtext
    • FUNC > CL to clear
    • Some examples: To get to the letter 'C', press 2 (ABC), and then press 3 (C is the 3rd letter). To get 'Z', press 9 (WXYZ), and then press 4 (Z is the 4th letter).
    • Numbers can be accessed by pressing 1 and then the corresponding number.
    • Symbols can be accessed by pressing 0 and then the corresponding position.
    • FUNC can be used to change between lower and upper case or between the different symbols.
  6. F1 (Done)/SEL/ENT to save the tag
  7. Frequencies: > SEL/ENT
    1. Enter your primary (red, c) and alternate (blue, a) control channels here.
    2. F1 (Save) the frequeencies
  8. F1 (Save) the TSYS
  9. ID: > Use the keypad to enter the DEC Talkgroups
  10. F1 (Save) the ID
  11. Tag: > SEL/ENT to edit
    • This is for your Talkgroup.
  12. F1 (Done)/SEL/ENT to save the tag
  13. F1 (Save) to save the TGRP

Now that wasn't too bad! The hardest part is over. Adding additional talkgroups only requires the following:

  1. PGM > F2 (NEW) > F1 (TGRP)
  2. Scan Lists: > Assign the TGRP to any scan list
  3. TSYS: > Use the Left/Right arrows to select your existing TSYS you just programmed
  4. ID: > Use the keypad to enter the DEC Talkgroups
  5. F1 (Save) the ID
  6. Tag: > SEL/ENT to edit
  7. F1 (Done)/SEL/ENT to save the tag
  8. F1 (Save) to save the TGRP

Now to scan:

  1. SCAN
  2. Use numbers on keypad to toggle scan lists 1-10 on and off
  3. FUNC and numbers on keypad to toggle scan lists 11-20 on and off

Thanks guys. . Just one question. I have the TSYS done. And I am picking up things (I input the c and a frequencies for the towers near by, in total 15) It's now scanning. Do I need the talk group ID in there too? Or will this just scan those frequencies for everything? If I do need the ID in there. How do I go in and do it (where do I out them) as I have tried. And. I did notice the ID 3000 come up once. Thanks again. At least I'm hearing something lol. My first bit of success at manual programming. However. I have yet to hear EHS. Which is what I was wanting LOL

And when I put in a freq like 771.78125. There's one more place for entry. And it automatically comes up 0 at the end. Is that OK? If not. What do I do. It won't stay blank? And I notice ID is wildcard?

If you have a wildcard it will pick up everything that is broadcast on those towers.

If you only want to hear specific talk groups then you need to enter just those talk groups and not have a wildcard.

The bottom half of the first paragraph in that link i posted tells you haw to enter talk groups.

There should be 6 numbers after the decimal point. It will automatically add a 0 if there is less than 6 numbers. That is the way it should work.

You don't necessarily have to enter any talk groups, not all are in use, some are rarely used. Just be sure that you have a wildcard talk group assigned to a scan list and when there is activity just Store it and later you can put an ID tag on it. A good program to use is Win500.

How do I add frequencies?
When I go into the only TSYS I have
Pro, Edit, TSYS, Edit,Go down to frequencies, I have 32 in there, but it will not let me add anymore?
It used to have lank places underneath of the last added (00000000) and just go down and add another but it just says end menu now

There is a limit of 32 frequencies per TSYS. The Alternate (a) frequencies are not required unless the system switches control channels frequently. The systems I monitor normally uses just the Control (c) frequencies. So, you might be able to delete/replace the Alternate frequencies with other Control frequencies.

OK, thanks
Yeah they switch a lot here
I only put in the C and A ones yesterday and was not getting anything (except fire) and noticed on my XT that most were coming in on alternates (up to 4 per C)

ramathorne what area do you live in?

North Eastern NS

On another note
I just redid this, exactly as shown, and the 651 (same antenna as my 996Xt) sitting side by side is not picking up anything. I put in all 32 freq for this area and nothing

1 (1) 053 (35) Ecum Secum Guysborough 771.78125c 772.03125a 772.28125 772.53125
1 (1) 054 (36) Melrose Guysborough 771.85625c 772.10625a 772.35625 772.60625
1 (1) 055 (37) Fenton Guysborough 769.13125c 769.38125a 769.63125 769.88125
1 (1) 056 (38) Lundy Guysborough 769.16875c 769.41875a 769.66875 769.91875
1 (1) 057 (39) Fox Island Guysborough 769.08125c 769.33125a 769.58125 769.83125
1 (1) 058 (3A) Arichat (Martinique) Richmond 769.30625c 769.55625a 769.80625 770.05625

1 (1) 080 (50) Aulds Cove Antigonish 772.39375c 772.64375a 772.89375 773.14375
1 (1) 081 (51) Fairmont Antigonish 769.11875c 769.36875a 769.61875 769.86875
1 (1) 082 (52) Antigonish Antigonish 773.18125c 773.43125a 773.68125 773.93125

When the 996xt picks up, lets say, 769.66875, I know it is in my 651, but the 651 stays silent and just keeps scanning
The 651 seems like it is scanning much slower than my 996xt?
I did just pick up 772.10625 on the 651 (and 996xt), first time it has done anything since last night, and the 996xt has been squawking constantly lol

You only need the control and alternate control channels. In that list there is 20 of them. If you have 32 then you must be also putting in the voice channels which you dont need and would slow down your scan speed. You only need the channels in red and blue listed in the database.

The reason i asked what area you was in cause i thought you was adding more counties than you are able to pick up.

I put in the other 12 because last night the 996xt picked up 2 of them. And there was extended chatter on one of them throughout the night (DOT) . So I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

The 996xt was probably displaying the voice channel being used. Your 651 will display the voice channel being used also. However you only need the control and alternate control channels programmed. The voice channels are just slowing down the scan speed.

So I can take those 12 frequencies out without missing chatter? As I just picked up 769.63125 on the 651? And that is the 3rd frequency listed on the Fenton Guysborough site...

Yes you can remove those 12 and you will still hear everything. The frequency you listed is a voice channel. The scanner is just displaying what voice channel is being used. it will still pick it up even if it not programmed. All the scanner needs to receive is the control channels.

If you press program then glob. Scroll all the way to the bottom where it says showCCinfo and change it to yes. The scanner will then display both the control channel and voice channel on the display.

If you're programming multiple sites that you can hear, you will likely want to explore the Multi-Site option on the Pro-651. By default, it locks onto the first control channel it finds and tries to hold on to it. If you use this option, you can make the scanner check all the control channels while it is scanning.

In the TSYS menu, you need to go under the section that says EXPERT BELOW. You will find Multi-Site:. You can use the left/right arrows to change it to Stat (Stationary). It will now check all the control channels that it can receive on each pass.

The Check All CC: options below that (when set to Stat) basically sets whether or not it does this check on each pass on the system. Yes means it will check all the control channels every time it scans the system. No means it will check a single different control channel on each pass.
