Hello,

You need to update the GREFwTool to Version 0.3.1.5.

Mine as well. Once I worked through my own shortcomings and did it correctly, the update went smoothly.

Can anyone help me understand what was removed from the 4.6 file, to make it fit the 668? Simple explanation please. I ask because if functionality sections were removed, I need to BYPASS those instructions in the manual (guide) and wiki references. Thank you very much!

From the way I interpreted things it was a bunch of padding in the file that didn't do anything. No functionality was removed.

Hello,

The file size was likely chosen so it could be a container for the largest possible firmware file, which is currently 512KB for the TRX-1/TRX-2. It also helps obscure things as you can not tell what extra bytes are used in the obfuscation process and exactly where the image is in the container. The firmware updater and Ez-Scan can remove the firmware from the container file and restore the correct size.

The experiment is more complicated these days as Whistler is trying to protect their intellectual property. I do not blame Whistler as they want people to buy new products that they support rather than modifying old products.

They can get greedy and possibly alienate the current users if they are not careful. Those old scanners are going wear out and fail eventually and will have to be replaced. Since Radio Shack is going out of business and won't be selling anymore PRO 668's than they only have Uniden Bearcat as a competitor. Maybe in the short they may lose sales but in the long haul could come out on top.

Thank you Wackyracer!
only few questions before attempt to 4.6 upgrade of PRO-668:
1.- I understand that I need to upgrade the GREFWtool?, I have the 0.2.0.3 version
2.- Do I need to download firmware WS1080e_U4.6 bin with a file size of (368340 bytes)? where can I found this bin file? Do I need to paste it to the WS1080 Digital software? as the last bin file when we upgraded to 4.5 version?
3.- Install the ws1080 driver? (as one of the last steps)
as allways I thank you!

1) YES
2) YES, the download links are in this forum between pag 47 and 50 you will have to scan through them to find the links. YOU must use the file sized (368340) and tell grefwtool where to find it. DO NOT DOWNLOAD 4.6 from the download link in the tool, it will not install. Just follow the written instructions. on page 47 in this group.

3) You need both drivers, the pro-668 driver to start, then the ws1080 to finish. Read the instructions several times then FOLLOW ALL the steps that apply to your version of windows. DO NOT SKIP any steps.

Thanks for the info Wackyracer, I have Windows 10 working in a K501U model of Asus.
I think the 4.6 upgrade for PRO-668 is working better than 4.5 with some difference, correct?
Anyway I will notify you if I can update my Pro-668.
Thanks and 73's de Jesus xe2kaf

I have not noticed any difference yet...both the 3.8 and the 4.5 worked markedly better than the 668 factory FW. The 4.6 certainly isn't worse, from what I've so far seen, and as I use the scanner more it may indeed be better. Bottom line, no reason to install 4.5 when you can install the newer 4.6.

Well it seems on top of things I had an sd card that gave out. Bought a new sd card (SanDisk) as recommended for this radio and completed the 4.6 update.
The radio is currently blowing me away. Everything is working great with the update, sounds better and reception has improved quite a bit. Thanks again.

Not sure what audio needed to be improved? There are still some system not as loud and some that are way louder then others. That is the complaint I have with the audio...it could stand to be more balanced then what it is.

I went from 3.8 to 4.6 in my 668. Once I updated ezscan and the library I noticed much clearer traffic on p25 simulcast systems. If you have not updated ezscan I recommend you do so because you cannot fully update the library such as sites talk groups ect. Especially if your area has changes. This is the problem I was facing till I updated ezscan.

Yes I was talking about the volume differences between PI and PII transmissions
I wonder why whistler doesn't address that issue because the DMR for the most part is balanced.
The Uniden 436 and 325p2 both have better balance with both phases than whistler does.

Try this as I think it helps a tad...for all analog non trunking turn on abst (audioboost).

For all digital turn AGC off.

I find DMR comes in the loudest, some analog comes in with the lowest volume. even with these settings.

Does 4.6 work on the Pro-18? Currently running 4.5. Saw some posts on the size/memory issues and never understood if would work on the Pro-18. Many thanks.
