If it is "bricked" then no, you can't do anything about it, you will have to pay Whistler the extra $$$ to have it corrected. If not, they do not charge any extra to upgrade, it's just the basic fee. It may come back tagged as "hacked" but it will be a fully functional WS-1080 and there's no extra charge. Either way, you're pretty much stuck with sending it in and paying the fee. Still, it's a worthwhile investment...my 668 was deaf as a post with the factory firmware, getting it updated really brought it to life.
