Good morning I have a pro 651 Radio Shack scanner which I have just ordered the cable to download the software to program it. Just curious as of which software to download and is one better than the other for my particular scanner. The state and County that I live in which is Monroe North Carolina Union County is on a digital trunking system.

You'll get multiple answers as to which one is the best for that radio. What works for me may not work for you, so my suggestion has always been to try them and see what works best for you. There are currently three software options and all of them provide a fully functional trial period.

The options are:

ARC500 from Software for Uniden Whistler HOME PATROL HP1 HP-1 PRO-700 BCD436HP BCD536HP Radioshack GRE GRECOM MFJ DSE AOR police scanner software BCD996XT BCD396XT BC346T BCT15X PRO-404 PRO-405 PRO-97 PRO-96 PRO-2096 PRO-106 PRO-197 PRO-164 PRO-160 PRO-162 psr50
PSREdit500 from PSREdit - Configuration Editors for Whistler, GRE, and Radio Shack scanners
WIN500 from Software for RadioShack PRO-series (PRO-92, 93, 95, 96, 97, 99, 163, 164, 106, 197, 651, 652), Whistler (WS1040, WS1065), and GRE PSR-series (PSR-500, 600, 300, 400, 310, 410) scanners

All three programs will do the job, it comes down to user preference. Since all three have 30-day free trials before you have to pay for them, there's no reason not to test-drive each extensively and see which you like best. I use Win500 but the others work just fine as well.

Thanks for the great information. Hopefully it will be easier then manually programming.

Once you learn the software (none of them are terribly difficult) it will be. Doing it manually is pretty much of a time-consuming PITA compared to using the software & cable.

I've spent a lot of time reading over the choices and watching some videos but still wonder if I'll have to manually input the frequencies and ids or will that be done automatically? Some things I'm having problems with manually programming is putting in multiple ids and understanding scan list. I'm hoping that I can have city, county and EMS on separate banks/channels. I have my 651 up and running and I'm proud of what I've did so far but I'm hoping the software will make it simpler

If you upgrade your Radio Reference membership to a Premium Membership you can do that automatically.

With that said, I still prefer to input things myself. I'm very picky about how things are organized, so I first put things into a Spreadsheet. I can then organize things the way I want them, and then use a few 'cut and paste' actions to move them to the software.

Hope this helps.
