Default 40-60 Meter HF Antenna

Could anyone give a suggestion of an HF antenna for balcony, just for listening on SSB in the bands of 40-60 meters?
I have already used the Opek HVT-490B and AOR SA7000, with unsatisfactory results.
With these two antennas, I can not receive any signal beyond 500-1000km.
I live on the 23rd floor of a condo.

Most any of the loops we've been discussing in other threads on this forum would likely work better. But don't be so hung up about how far away you are hearing; propagation is the other side of the coin, and it hasn't been all that good of late. Those bands are basically nite time bands, so listening after sunset is the way to go. They won't propagate very well in daylight.

You don't say where you are (I suspect you're in the UK given your use of metrics) but Mother Nature hasn't been kind to us HF folks for the last couple of years, unfortunately
