While programming a scanner for an SSD deputy last night, I commented on the terrible Site 002 reception on his scanner (it's a Pro-94, so anyone who's used one probably knows how interference-prone they are). He told me that they are rebanding soon. I asked him how soon and he said in the next 4 to 5 months.

According to information I've heard, the process starts in October.

My guess is that the radios will be flash-upgraded (or replaced if too old). Newer radios should allow OTA reprogramming.

I haven't seen a license for a trunked system yet - only for a conventional system. Will they run the two systems in parallel for a while?

Also, I hear that they will still be done by May 2011.

You can't OTA reprogram with a 3600 trunked system. Also, they're just rebanding so there will not be a new system built alongside the old one. The existing infrastructure will get reprogrammed. Since the system is new enough the transition should be as simple as flipping a switch (ok, a little more effort) once the subscribers have been reprogrammed.

if its typical like how the state does rebanding

the new rebanded control freqs will be streaming new and old -back to back repeaters

and after all radios are programmed with new control freqs

the old control channels are turned off

like how wayne was saying

thats the usual easy way to switch over without causing interruption of service
the smartzone switch was to allow the zones they have and it allowed the p25 and encryption capability

Any information on the proposed frequencies? Control channels? As I've mentioned before, the only license applications I've found so far are frequencies for conventional, not trunked

There should be (or will be) licenses with the new rebanded frequencies. They'll have a different service type (as opposed to YP, etc).

Some of the Sacramento County frequencies shown above are included in their conventional system application (WPHZ928) - license class GE. Some aren't on that application. I still see no application for frequencies for a trunked system.

typically the control channels SHOULD be (but dont have to be ) the highest 4 freqs in the channel list

i ASSUME the reband will go thru first - then if everything is successful p25 would kick in for the applicable channels

based on that list i would assume that the city frequencies would be Site 1, County would be Site 2, I'm going to create a couple of systems with those freqs and see if/when they start popping up.

If that's true I'll have to go to a BCD396XT. Not sure if I'm ready to drop $500+ on one yet. I've been trying to wait for the price to go down on these digital scanners. I guess that's the cost of progress though.
