Man reading poetry

This morning in northern San Diego I am hearing what sounds like a recording of a man reading poetry on 867.0125 C156.7 and again on 155.4750 C156.7. Anyone else hearing this?

A typical way to calltest is to play an Audiobook over the channel.

The last time a new system was launched in this area, they played Edgar Allan Poe.

Yes, this is the drive testing that we are doing to confirm the coverage of the re-engineered antenna patterns.

However, it should only be on I-TAC2 (867.0125 with NO CTCSS transmit), not all of the ITACs. VHF should be VLAW31 (155.475, again with NO CTCSS transmit).

Please let me know here if you are in fact decoding CTCSS from the sites.

Thanks for clearing this up Don. As of noon today I an hearing 155.475 with no tone and 867.0125 with 156.7. I am guessing that when my scanner locked onto other frequencies, it was really bleed over. When listening with a Motorola APX 7000 I hear the tape on 800 I TAC2, 800 CLEMARS, VHF NALEMARS and V LAW 31.

Don't know if it's part of your testing but I am hearing a dead carrier with a 156.7Hz tone on ITAC1, 866.5125MHz.

ITAC2, 867.0125MHz, is very distorted sound like a "can opener" sound with a tone of 156.7Hz.

155.715MHz with a 103.5Hz tone is clear with audio but low level (Uniden BCT15 in NFM mode so keep that in mind).

155.475MHz is very distorted but some audio detectable (like a bad simulcast phase mix) with a 156.7Hz tone.

EDIT: Also getting pretty clear audio of same content on Clemars 800, 868.5125MHz with a tone of 156.7Hz.

There are multiple transmitters up on 800 CLEMARS, VLAW31 (same as NALEMARS), ITAC2 and COMM15 (155.715). We are supposed to using no tone on VLAW31, 800 CLEMARS and ITAC2 for these tests; I will remind the vendor in the morning. We'll also look into the dead carrier on ITAC1.

Hearing distorted (as from multiple transmitters out of phase) audio on VLAW31 (155.475MHz) and COMM15 (155.715MHz) with the former reading a tone of 156.7Hz and the latter reading a tone of 103.5Hz.

Also hearing pretty clear audio of same content on 800 CLEMARS (868.5125MHz) with a tone reading of 156.7Hz.

Nothing on the others.

All as of 7:03AM local.

I was up in Riverside County today driving past March Air Reserve Base when I heard Don's test recording on I TAC2. It was weak but clear. I was using a BCD396XT with a radio shack 800 MHz rubber ducky antenna.

Not sure if this still matters but:

868.5125 (CLEMARS 800) - dead carrier with 156.7Hz tone

866.5125 (ITAC1) - test content with 156.7Hz tone

867.0125 (ITAC2) - distorted version of above with 156.7Hz tone

155.715 (COMM15) - very distorted version of above with 103.5Hz tone

155.475 (VLAW31/NALEMARS) - extremely distorted version of above with 156.7Hz tone.

As of 7:19AM local.

Receiver location is northeast Carlsbad not far from Oceanside border.

All have tones if that still matters.

FWIW, if still interested, as of 4:37PM local I am hearing the test traffic on ITAC2, 867.0125MHz, with a tone of 156.7Hz with mild phase distortion in the background.

On COMM15, 155.715MHz I can barely hear the test traffic as the distortion is quite heavy from my location but the signal is strong, S7 on my Icom which is strong for me.

155.475MHz, VLAW31, is yielding an extremely distorted signal that I cannot read any traffic through but with a 156.7Hz tone.

CLEMARS 800, 868.5125MHz is still a dead carrier with a 156.7Hz tone, mild phase distortion, signal is weak and fading at my location.

Also, Don, check your PM when you get a chance.

The reason for the distortion is multiple transmitters up at the same time (no, it is not a simulcast system; we test with all sites keyed up to get the composite signal levels). Tomorrow is the last day (and the teams driving around are ready for it to end).

When I was working in a development lab my bench was right next to the screen room. On one project there was one guy constantly working inside the screen room on a vocoder sub-circuit (I think - some part of the voice A/D or D/A chain anyway as I recall). He used to run tests all day long on that thing and used a recorded and constantly looped portion of a COIT carpet cleaning advertisement (complete with the old "Call for COOOIIIT" juingle part) for the test! Even when he wasn't there it would often be running (I think he was recording error counts or something). Drove me and another engineer working on a bench next to mine nuts after the first few days of this (plus the ant invasion at the same time)!

I know when the system was first being built-out the audio books were used a lot. Sometimes they would hang up resulting in just a solid dead key.

Thankfully any P25 testing is much easier to test by running a V.52 pattern and the appropriate decoder (Voyager or supporting test equipment). For any bidirectional testing Voyager can talk in to the V.52 test channel also. The V.52 test channel sounds a lot like a CC but it won't be decoded.

When we test human to human we use the Harvard sentences. They're odd sounding so when you hear someone saying them you'll know what they're doing.
