I tried this a couple times. The first time it worked very well until I broke it lowering the mast on the roof. The second one I tried didn't work so well. I imagine impedance is an important factor.

I like to experiment with various settings, configurations, antennas, etc. Recently I picked up a RCA antenna (model ANT 146) designed for digital TV reception. I hooked it up to a couple of my scanners (Pro-97 and Pro-197) and got very good results - picked up a lot more radio traffic than normal.

There have been many discussions about this, and yes it will work if done right. Many yagi style tv antennas can be modified to mount vertically but the key thing to keep in mind here is to use low loss rg6 quad shield. Also take into account if you are wanting to hear vhf/uhf both.
