• Effective immediately we will be deleting, without notice, any negative threads or posts that deal with the use of encryption and streaming of scanner audio.

We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

If you violate these guidelines your post will be deleted without notice and an infraction will be issued. We are not against discussion of this issue. You just need to do it in the right place. For example:

VDOT Safety Service Patrol in Richmond

Had the pleasure of speaking with one of the Richmond SSP contractors and can 100% can confirm they're on DOT Tac 4.

    Richmond City

It sounds like the broadcaster is scanning just about everything. Just listened for a few minutes and heard Richmond Fire, Chesterfield Fire, VCU PD. The quality seems degraded though, like the units are underwater.

    Richmond City

They're all strapped encryption, same with Chesterfield and Henrico.

Here's another one joining the encryption stampede

That’s actually not correct at all...If something truly happened, radio audio can still be retrieved by the general public under a FOIA request regardless of encryption. In the long run, it doesn’t really protect the department at all, other than during the live moments of an actual critical...

Emergency Declared for demonstrations in VA

They must have been patching things from the interop frequencies then. VSP and the mutual aid law enforcement agencies were operating on one of the 700MHz interop tac's, with FIRE/EMS being on a separate one. A mobile repeated was set up presumably at the command post near JPJ. I image they had...

Emergency Declared for demonstrations in VA

Due to the needed interoperability between all the jurisdictions that were present due to mutual aid, the majority of communications appeared to be on the nationwide 700MHz interop frequencies. Traffic related to the protests was very limited on STARS.

Emergency Declared for demonstrations in VA

Don’t forget about the nationwide 700/800 interoperability channels

VSP with blue and red lights

New York changed their laws in 2007 IIRC allowing rear-facing blue lights on emergency vehicles for increased visibility.

    Richmond/Henrico/Chesterfield to encrypt July 2

If that's the case, why the complete silence on all encrypted talkgroups now?

    Richmond/Henrico/Chesterfield to encrypt July 2

I was going to ask the same. Total silence on my PSR-500 on Police channels for all three jurisdictions. It wasn't a talkgroup change as well was it?

    STARS agencies

I agree. The entire point of STARS was to bring state agencies together on ONE radio system for interoperability. I don't understand why an argument is being made to essentially kick users off of STARS in lieu of using cell phone. That's the exact opposite of the reason the system came to...

VSP with blue and red lights

From what I've heard, it has to do with a study that Virginia Tech is doing in regards to the visibility of blue vs. red lights at day time and night time. I'm not sure how accurate that information is, it's just what's been mentioned by a couple of Troopers when I mentioned it the other day.

    STARS

Tags aren't read over the radio because LEO's need the info; most traffic stops are given out over the air for officer safety so that nearby officers are aware of the stop and can assist if necessary. Some metro Richmond agencies actually have policies prohibiting the entry of traffic stops via...

    Hanover County

Be looking for nearly all law enforcement agencies in the metro RVA area as well as some Fire/EMS to be 100% encrypted in the next few years, especially when the new Phase II 800Mhz system goes live...

    'Homeland' filming in Richmond area

They’ll be hanging around the area for a while. I was working off-duty at the set yesterday and the director mentioned most all of Season 7 will be filmed in and around the Richmond area. If I end up working with them again, I’ll bring a scanner along and see what I can find.

    CSX RR Frequencies

I suppose I'll refer to my original post asking if anyone has actually heard any type of communications on these frequencies, or if they were arbitrarily added to the database due to an update on an FCC license. Railroads all over the country are licensed for a variety of frequencies in various...

    CSX RR Frequencies

I can confirm that both 160.530 and 161.160 are both used as yard frequencies on CSX (ex. C&O RR) trackage. Both are also used in Fulton Yard in Richmond as well as Clifton Forge Yard.

    CSX RR Frequencies

I'm not sure what railroad crossing project you're referring to. This isn't something being discussed in the railroad/railfan community. The only "project" that is a hot topic currently is the installation of Positive Train Control, which is a new safety feature mandated by the federal...

    CSX RR Frequencies

To help clear things up, here's the list of the new frequencies that were added. These are frequencies I haven't ever had programmed before and have yet to hear comms on. 160.290 160.350 160.395 160.725 160.740 160.980 161.220 161.265 161.325 161.355 161.370 161.400 161.430

    CSX RR Frequencies

161.010 is the North Yard at Acca, 161.310 is the South Yard at Acca. There are other frequencies listed as "North Yard" or "South Yard" which I don't believe are being used. At least, I haven't heard any traffic on them yet.
