    Longwire

A "long wire" antenna is defined as being many wavelengths long and 30ft at 27MHz is less than one wavelength. If you make the wire about 36ft long or a full wavelength it would have a four lobe clover leaf radiation pattern at about 45deg angles to the wire with a tiny bit of gain. The...

FlexRadio Systems has new "very smart" Antenna Tuner coming 3rd Qtr. 2021

The 500w Elecraft tuner does just about everything this new Flex tuner does, including tuning wtihout even transmitting when coupled with an Elecraft radio. It remembers tuning solutions and when you change freq it reads where the radio is and tunes before you can even hit the mic button. Its...

    Icom: Microphone Jack Issue IC705

It should be easy to buy a 2.5mm plug, short out the appropriate pins to key the radio and determine if its the radio or mic. Or get on some local repeaters and ask if anyone has a 705 that could plug their mic in for a quick test.

    Icom: Microphone Jack Issue IC705

I rotated and abused the the mic plug on my 705 and can't get it to key up unless I pull the mic plug out a little. Good chance the mic jack is faulty on N2MWEs radio.

    Icom: Microphone Jack Issue IC705

Check above the S meter to see if it says VOX. If it does turn it off. Rotating the mic connector can cause a little noise on the mic line and if VOX is on that will make it transmit briefly. Doesn't explain why it doesn't transmit when pressing the PTT.

    Icom: Microphone Jack Issue IC705

When you say it keys briefly, are you pressing the mic button when that happens or does it key briefly when turning the mic plug and not keying the mic? It would be more likely to have a bad mic cable than a bad mic jack but anything is possible.

    Coax relay needed

When a limiter kicks in diodes are conducting and creating lots of IMD, they will actually create bleedover type problems when working. Fortunately the one pictured above operates at a very high level that you would normally not see unless you have a transmitter and antenna very close to your...

    Coax relay needed

I don't have a data sheet handy but I think they clamp the output at about 10dBm or 10 miliwatts and they start to take effect around 0dBm or a little less. They will handle up to about 10 watts of energy, which is way more than you would get with two antennas close to each other at modest power...

    Technical questions Radio

On the antenna question, you want the antenna to best serve the needed area, so if the repeater is in the center of the user area I would expect it to be omni. If its in the corner of the needed area you can choose an antenna with a directional pattern usually giving more gain. I've always gone...

    Technical questions Radio

Even with a separate tx and rx antenna with vertical separation, you must have filters on the transmit and receive side to achieve enough isolation for a repeater to work. Vertical antenna separation might give you 10 to 25dB isolation but you need at least 70dB for a low power repeater with a...

    40 watt CB SWR Testing.

What model meter? If a radio can put out 40 watts with peak modulation it should be right around 10 watts dead carrier no modulation. Unless its a dual needle meter that reads out SWR where the meters cross you should have to cal the meter for SWR and I wouldn't think a power scale would matter...

    Technical questions Radio

Receive antenna always on top for reasons stated in post #3. Many towers have the top tier reserved only for receive antennas. 100w compared to 50w is a noticeable increase, not tremendous but if you are used to a 100w repeater and someone turns it down to 50w you may want the power back. This...

    R8600 antenna question

I have one, bought it to dissect and learn how its made. On HF its way down in signal level compared to something like a PAR end fed SW with 45ft of wire. Its better than using a VHF/UHF Discone on HF and it is quite but mostly because its somewhat deaf. It will pick up lots of big SW stations...

AS-1729/VRC with MX-6707 Base Matching unit for 10M 6M ham?

Hard to say if the non resonant dipole with elevated feed would work better than an end fed, both near the bumper. I put a military 4 hole mount on my new truck on the upper internal bed wall about 2/3 back from the cab and so far every antenna I've tested there works great with adequate ground...
