Police Scanners illegal, but not radar detectors?

Firearms are also legally used for defense. More often than is reported by the media. It is especially helpful to elderly who can no longer defend themselves physically. Motor vehicles are used in the commission of crimes, as well as kitchen knives, axes and any other item someone chooses to...

    Another (non-intelligent donkey) antenna question . . .

    There ya go. Hudson river.

    Another (non-intelligent donkey) antenna question . . .

A bit unusual that far away, but the coast stations may be on very high towers to get far off the coast. So you happen to be in a lucky spot.

    Another (non-intelligent donkey) antenna question . . .

16 inches is probably not the best compromise for VHF Air and Marine depending upon whatever the other half of the antenna is. It may be, but not likely. It depends on the other half of the antenna. For a handheld radio that other half varies greatly depending on who and how the radio is held...

Picked up my first radio. How do I scan ambo/fire frequencies on Baofeng UV-5R?

I am constantly amazed by the number of questions about scanning public safety with those cheap a** Chinese radios. I haven't seen the marketing that touts they can scan all public safety. Only if your area uses old conventional frequencies which is getting more rare these days.

AM radio phased out in some EVs

Point is, if the AM really gets a lot of interference from the car, how likely would any one use AM? The other options would be used. Impossible to cover all grounds, and what if they do not have any of these turned on? Just another how can we one-up.

    Beavis & Butthead

Why do these discussions turn into pissing contests with folks needing to one-up others? Time to take another long break from these forums.

Of course not, and didn't mean it wouldn't be; however, I have yet to see encrypted P25 single channel that wasn't federal. Of course non-trunked exists, but is usually trunked.

AM radio phased out in some EVs

Isn't that really a weak argument? Who doesn't have a smartphone these days that will get a national alert. And if there is no AM, FM radio gets national alerts as well as XM radio. Also, if the AM really gets a lot of interference from the car, how likely would any one use AM?

GPS database modification for mobile scanning

Forgot about radio relay on other VHF frequencies. I used to receive NC Highway Patrol cars on 42 MHz from a remote receiver site 45 miles away, that relayed the receiver site audio back to dispatch near where I live. There was also a transmitter there, but I could receive the transmitter just...

GPS database modification for mobile scanning

These days, internet or microwave. Old days microwave, dedicated phone lines or repeater input from the remote dispatch.

Yes, but an encrypted radio would likely be on a trunked system in which it could be unsubscribed from that system. Probably wouldn't be a single frequency P25.

Ok I thought I saw Bosque county P25, but hopefully local Hans will have fun with a Fox hunt. I would jump on that in a minute. Would be a fun challenge.

The first mistake made was to reply to them over the air and confirm they can interfere. During training exercises in the military, radios would be taken by the enemy to see how we would respond. Bosque county is P25 trunked. The radio could be deactivated or taken off the system. Maybe they...

Best radio recommendation for hiking in the mountains? VX-6R?

5 miles is going to be difficult with any handheld radio. You can expect probably no more than 2 miles and realiably 1 mile in decent conditions, unless there is a very nearby repeater. Especially in terrain with lots of trees and hills. As said before, MURS using VHF will have a little...

To ham it up or not and why - a discussion of "fit"

Congrats on the General ticket! The Extra is about the same amount of studying and maybe less depending on how much knowledge you retain studying for General. I did them within a few weeks of each other. Much of the information is the same.
