    ELF to VLF Monitoring

A few older commercial tabletop receivers extend down to 10 kHz, the Bearcat DX-1000 will, the Sony CRF-1 will go lower still. I never had a Realistic DX-300/302 but I have heard that they do indeed receive these VLF frequencies.

    Bearcat Uniden DX-1000 Schematic help

I love my DX-1000 and will never get rid of it. It has weaknesses but if you take the time to find it’s strengths it is a very good receiver.

    Used tabletop rigs

I bought a Sony ICF-6800W to have the analog plus digital display. I got lucky, a previous owner corrected the known PLL problem (and added an extra audio output). Great radio but known to have failures.

    The Classic RF-2200

I had a day off and went to the beach today, so I took my Panasonic '2200 to enjoy the noise free location. Normally I use it at work for FM since it's great on that band, but I wanted to see if it was still a MW wonder like I remember for daytime signals. I was not disappointed. Not only is the...

    Shortwave Radio Listening/Antenna Question........

I find that 15' is the mininum height for a HF wire receive antenna, but if you can raise it higher definitely do it As for the coax, higher frequencies have greater attenuation on long runs which is why LMR-400 etc is used for UHF and higher frequencies. For HF RG-8X is very good

    Good Longwave Night

Good to read that your FRG-100 works well for NDB hunting! Do you have an optional narrow filter in the CW slot or are you using the stock SSB filter? I have an old stock FRG-100 still factory sealed (the CRF-1 is great on LW so I haven't been in any hurry to open it) but did pick up an Inrad...

    analog radio

Is there a partcular reason why you asked about current production? Boombox gave the same answer as I would have, radios from the 80's of which I have a few. The Panasonic Commander Series (RF-2600 for example) and a number of Sony models were analog with a digital frequency counter. Despite...

    Good Longwave Night

Lots of Canadian NDBs flying into Florida tonight! Got some new ones between 350-400 kHz, very little in the way of lighting crashes.

Stuff You Wish You Still Had

I always regretted selling my Drake R-7 and Sherwod SE-3, so 15 years later I probably overpaid for an R-7A and unused SE-3. Now that I loaded it up with the 8, 4 and 1.8 filters and the AUX-7 board it's not going anywhere (I'd never get my money back anyway). As for cars, I shoud have kept my...

Antenna Switch (Receive Only) Suggestion ?

I've never used a Diamond but the 3 position switch reviews on eHam are very positive (4.9 out of 5). Active antenna switchers are expensive. I have an Elad ASA-15 (12 dB boost for one antenna and five receivers) sent from Germany and cost me @$300 shipped. Worth it for me, but certainly not...

    Good Longwave Night

Taking part in the NDB group's Coordinated Listening Event for the first time, logged quite a few new ones including four from Canada down here in southwest Florida (one from British Columbia). More north of the border than in-state beacons. Thankfully I remembered that the CRF-1 has a pretty...

I'm a total beginner shortwave listener, are there even any signals here in the central U.S.?

In a very strange way, although I miss the old days of many station to listen to in the evening, the remaining broadasters have much less interference from adjacent stations, which allows me to use the wider bandwidth filters that I prefer for AM (8 kHz+).

    WWV Geophysical Alerts

I noticed that last night, too. I think it was 0218 UTC on September 1. Thought it was odd, maybe they stopped them starting 9/1/2019 but wouldn't there have been any announcement first?

    Aero Shannon VOLMET

SPR-4, great receiver! A few years ago with higher sunspots I was pulling in Auckland Volmet on my Sony ICF-6800W using the whip antenna quite well here in Florida, as well as Azores and Senegal aero radio. When the solar cycle picks up in a couple of years give it a try (kind of pointless at...
