After doing the upgrade the lack of display brightness is really evident. I'm considering opening it up and doing something to ramp up the output.

That's an options board. We had Transcrypt voice scramblers in the units at work in that location. Can you take the little cover off and see what it is? Being a CDM1550LS it might be some LTR trunking add on. I wouldn't expect it to consume much current though.
