If talkgroups are coming up unknown, ID Search is on. Download and Monitor must both be On for a favorites list when you Write to Scanner. Download sends the favorites list to the scanner. Monitor enables it to scan.
Are you using programming software? For your scanner you can use ARC500 or PSREdit500. I use Butel ARC500 Basic to program my Radio Shack PRO-106, the older brother of your scanner.
I used a 1/2 wave CB marine antenna on a popup camper trailer with a plastic top. A 1/2 wave antenna does not require a ground plane and it folded over when the camper was not in use.

I looked at a friend's BCD536HP which was totally dead. No display, no backlight, no nothing. It was a bad SD card. The SD card is the weakest link in the chain and should always be eliminated first.
