BTW for all the folks that have been loyal followers of this thread from the beginning the glory is gone... I have been using photobucket for image hosting and even had a paying subscription for their service but as you have probably heard they are no more so all those images are essentially...

Waddayamean 'sorry'? I miss this old thread and all the friends that I'v made along the way. Anytime you have a question or a reference for this thread by all means RESURRECT! As for the insulation in the roof, first let me say it made a TREMENDOUS difference even as I was putting it in. The...

Any outboard Serial or USB GPS would work great to get your 800 running maps etc. You may need GPS Gate to properly distribute the GPS string to the appropriate program. Also a USB WiFi dongle will solve your connectivity issue. The on-board WiFi add on is scarce at best if not pure onobtainium...

Make sure that you send us some pics of your install once you get it the way you want it. FWIW I saw a portable repeater build out for deployments that was installed in a Pelican case. (Watertight) Another idea is a military RACK case for your portable repeater. The cases are cheap but...

Currently that doesn't pose a problem as NXDN / DMR dominate UHF and P25 dominates VHF & 700-800. I'm hoping a future firmware upgrade will allow all modes on all bands.

Sounds like a 7000 would do you just fine and YES the 7000 has come down considerably with the introduction of the 8000. Now if Kenwood will just get their heart right on entitlement keys for the NX-5x00 series I would get one immediately and be installing it next week. Honestly, as legacy...

Electrically they are similar and look the same on the outside but the similarity ends there. Parts are not interchangeable and even the frame is not the same. In fact even the cases and keyboards are different. The only interchangeable parts are batteries, knobs and antennas (that I have...

The short answer is my truck was not involved as I was too busy on the Ambulance the night of the Gatlinburg fire. Lyra sat unused during a point in time she could have been a lifesaver. When the storms came through that ultimately brought the fire under control we had no HAM representative...

I LIKE that idea! Feds could mandate that all new cars have a device that would receive the 900 MHz beacon. This on board device would shut off the stereo, set of a tone and flash an "EMERGENCY" indicator on the dashboard alerting the occupants to an approaching emergency vehicles. That -...

Considering the regulations and red tape for getting an Opti-Comm authorized I'm not thinking it will be worth the trouble since there are only two Opti-Comm equipped traffic lights in my response area. It's fun to think about it though.

The entire bar relies on the individual flashers in the LINZ6s all sync'ed to the rest of the truck If... big IF I did the Opti-Comm thing I would disconnect the center clear from the SYNC circuit, set it to steady burn and drive it separately. Shimming the bottom of the individual lighthead...

The old 4 head TIR3 Dominator hasn't kept up with technology very well over the years so it's time to upgrade / replace. If you have been following this thread for any length of time (yes I've been away for a while) then you know I can't do anything 'off the shelf'. Besides, if you build it...

I discovered the hard way that the USB port on a Cradlepoint MBR1400 doesn't have enough 'juice' to keep the Open Spot running. More likely the USB port is set to look for a modem and when it doesn't see one it resets. So an external 5 volt USB supply is in order. I got the two USB port version...

Once installed in the rack the Open Spot is barely noticeable, however on a dark road late at night the lights blinking in the back took some getting used to.

One of the fastest growing segments of Amateur Radio is DMR. As things evolve and funding permits I will eventually trade out the current 90 series Kenwood for an NX system that will allow for DMR but until then there is a much cheaper way to get on the DMR mobile bandwagon. The SharkRF Open...

Return of the Tahoe Lyra For far too long I have been working far too many hours and not devoting resources to the things I love, that changes NOW! I;m back in the Memphis area after about 2 1/2 years of working on the East Side of the state and while I love the folks I've been around it's...
