Anyone have opinions on Yeasu airband handhelds? FTA250 and 550 specifically

I have an FTA-250L and it performs pretty well. Like any AM radio however, it is a bit susceptable to electrical and other RF noise, especially in a vehicle. An external antenna fixes that problem but for handheld use away from interference, it works great. I briefly used an Icom side by side...

Shenandoah County Public Safety P25 System

Anyone have any new info on the upgraded system that is being installed? I have heard from multiple (reliable) sources that the system is currently being built and is “supposed” to be online by years end. High level users of the system have visited other Motorola P25 systems to get a feel for...

G5 & East Coast Pagers Review

Todd, Have you successfully setup the G5 on STARS? I have been debating going the SDS100 or G5 route. If the G5 will do Rockingham and STARS, I am good. The other areas I monitor, Fairfax and Roanoke should work fine although Fairfax will be 100% encrypted very soon... Thanks! Hank

    Harrisonburg-Rockingham County going P-25 [1 of 2]

From what I had heard, the talk groups should stay the same. Thats several month old info so it may not be accurate. I hope to do some scanning of the system this evening after work and see if we cant get the database updated pretty quickly.

    Multiple receiver Question

I would highly recommend the power dividers from Advanced receiver. We use them extensively on multiple radio server setups and they do a great job. If gain is needed, an ARR preamp can be installed inline prior to the divider to help overcome the signal loss from insertion of the divider...

    Shenandoah County finally going P25

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet or not since I did not see anything come up when searching the forums.. Looks like Shenandoah County is seeking proposals to finally upgrade their aging UHF conventional radio system to a new UHF, Phase II P25 capable system. Here is a link to the RFP...

    Nxdn used for railroad?

All three of these railroads are licensed but have not begun using any NXDN in VA yet. NS and CSX are however using it sparingly in other parts of their systems, mainly in yards and police use. Highly unlikely the road channels will go to NXDN any time in the foreseeable future.

    Macon, GA NS Audio Feed

If 160.245 is active, likely so is 160.830. It is a duplex channel 2 on the former SOU territory. 160.245 is the disaptcher side of the comms and 160.830 is the train side. You may not have heard any traffic if the train was too far away.

Abingdon, Beamer knob or Whitetop Mountain depending where you are located. There is some overlap of coverage from the sites based on location.

    EDACS System and Dynamic(?) TG's w/ 436hp

I was referring to the standard, non patched dispatch channels for County and City Fire. They are not digital ProVoice, but rather analog trunking talkgroups. I assume this is due to the fact they are patched to the UHF paging channel when in use. The "dynamic" talkgroups are only present when...

Shenandoah County Radio System in need of replacement

Interesting story a few days ago in the Northern VA Daily. Shenandoah County has received end of life notices for both E911 consoles and radio system. Appears the new system will likely be a digital trunked system of some sort. Official: County E911 gear running out of time | The Northern...

Best STARS mobile scanner - Query

The UnidenBCD436HP works great on STARS everywhere I have tried it around the state. I use a tuned VHF antenna when monitoring STARS and also lockout the sites not pertinient to the area I am monitoring which speeds up scanning and locking on to a control channel. of all of the digital scanners...

    Photos of Various BCD436HP Cases

Hello, Do any forum members have good photos (multiple angles) of the various cases offered for the BCD436 scanners? I have seen some front only shots of both the Nylon and Soft leather models and all sides of the hard leather case but not many detail shots. I am specifically interested in the...

    EDACS System and Dynamic(?) TG's w/ 436hp

I too have noticed this "dynamic" talkgroup setup while monitoring the system. I am guessing it happens as a result of the multiple simulcast transmissions with RCFD and HFD. Definately occurs on every call dispatch and sometimes on operations talkgroups as well. The tones are broadcast on the...

    XTS2500 Battery Question

As others have said, Impres is the way to go. The charger will condition the battery as needed and the overall usable life is fantastic. My non-impress batteries on other portables pale in comparison to the impres batts on my 2500. I have purchased from WisCom and they are a good source.

    Alexandria Project 25 TRS

Supposed to be a P25 FDMA Type I system from what I have heard. I think the orginal post annoucement that the system was online is simply meaning that the control channel is now active. I reprogrammed the Motorola and found that the "Old" system is still alive and well and I have not heard any...

    Alexandria Project 25 TRS

Any talkgroups available for this system? Same as older mixed mode system? Not hearing a thing and neither is the audio feed.

    800 Mhz Radio

Botetourt is a UHF system and city / County systems are 800Mhz systems respectively. As others have stated, get a good UHF radio for the Botetourt system ( I use an HT1250) and use a good scanner for the Roanoke systems or an XTS2500. Both can be programmed to passively monitor the County P25...
