HP-1: HomePatrol & Data Bursts On Analog

That did the trick! Thank you!

HP-1: HomePatrol & Data Bursts On Analog

Update: Turning the squelch all the way down allows me to hear the data bursts just fine. Turning it up just enough to stay quiet between transmissions doesn’t produce any audio though - even though it does stop on the channel like it’s receiving a transmission. Audio AGC on/off has no effect...

HP-1: HomePatrol & Data Bursts On Analog

I have an old Uniden HomePatrol that I use for general scanning (most of my area is still EDACS or Analog), and will occasionally supplement my Kenwood NX-5700 for railroad stuff. In that respect, I figured I'd add a Favorites List just for the Head of Train/End of Train UHF frequencies that...

Icom shows new IC-R15 at Tokyo Ham Fair

I’ll be curious to see how it performs for railroad stuff. The R30 was the gold standard for VHF railroad comms, and I see the R15 specifically mentions railroad listeners as a target audience a few times. Yes, NXDN would be nice, but it’s not necessary for 99% of railroad listening.

Icom shows new IC-R15 at Tokyo Ham Fair

If they would be willing to include NXDN/IDAS, this would be a slam dunk for railfans too. As it is, I still don't foresee mainline communications going digital any time soon (if ever), but better to have it and not need it. Still though, if the receiver is on par with the R30, it'll still be...

    Vehicle RFI Regulations

Are there any such laws in the United States that dictate acceptable RFI levels in a newer vehicle (2018 model year in this case)? Some Google searching isn’t turning up any answers, but perhaps I’m not using the right terminology in my search. The fuel injectors in my Honda CRV are spewing out...

    R30 R30 replacement?

No one seems to know for sure regarding a true replacement. The R15 has made an appearance, but its specs are drastically beneath that of the R15, so much so that it really can’t be called a replacement.

    Casual train monitoring tips?

Owner of DefectDetector.net here. You are correct that it is largely a one man band. I do have someone helping with maintaining the database now, but it is an immense project that gets a lot of attention. I work full time & then some in the railroad industry, and not many people have stepped...

    Question for RailHams

I’ve got the trifecta: buff, railroader, & have my ham ticket. Do I win a prize?? 😀

Commercial radio that will scan all 97 AAR channels.

The V86 is excellent - better ears than the V80 also currently being offered. The IC2300H mobile is also fantastic, every bit as good of ears as the 2200H it replaced but with a bit better selectivity. Nothing beats the R30 though for amateur radios or receivers - it’s an absolute monster on...

Combining two vhf antennas, one yagi and one omni?

If DPD Productions still made these, I would’ve said go this route: DPD Productions - TrainTenna Railroad Band Antennas for Commercial & Hobbyist Applications

    Sensitivity better on ham radio

NX-3720 all day. Between myself & a few friends, we've had close to 10 different NX-700s from various sources - all had pretty poor RX when compared to the TK-7180 & other analog-only Kenwood radios. The current generation of NX-3720s, NX-5700s, etc. have the best receivers & audio quality...

    Defect Detectors

Hey guys, This is my website that I've been working on since last fall. It's all database-driven, hence the old detectors show up on the map too (perhaps I should change the default to 'Active: Yes' instead of 'Active: All' - this can be changes in the Filter). Old audio clips are especially...

GE Quest Railroad Clean Cab VHF (148-174Mhz) Radio 12R Series II 50W Train

We used them at a shortline I worked at. The 12RIIs had poor sensitivity & selectivity compared to the Ritrons and Astro Spectras we used. The 3D series seemed much better on both fronts. The original 12R model was a Harmon unit, which GE got when they purchased them.

    NX-5200 K3 export recordings

32 GB is the max, as that's the max for SDHC. At 64 GB, memory cards switch to SDXC, which isn't supported.

    Hudson Valley Railroad Feed

Good Evening Everyone, I currently host a couple of Hudson Valley railroad radio feeds ('CSX River Sub - Newburgh Area' and 'Metro-North Hudson Line'). I have sites in Kingston and Selkirk that I am working on getting up & running to collectively provide coverage from Albany down to Newburgh...

    Defect Detector Website

A lot of people have been requesting a map, frequency, and date of recording. Unfortunately the exact date is unknown for >90% of these clips, but I was able to handle the other two requests: http://database.defectdetector.net/ Still a work in progress with a LOT of data still to enter, but...

    Defect Detector Website

As much as I would like to, unfortunately over 90% of them are unknown. I could provide a rough timeframe of several years for many, but that's about as good as it gets. As such, I elected to leave it out and go for more of a system-wide approach like I did with the Conrail Detectors page...
