Scanner Master NY/NNJ Communications Guide 7th Edition

I no longer live in the area, so I'm selling my copy of the Scanner Master New York/Northern New Jersey Communications Guide - 7th Edition. It's in good condition - some wear on the cover, and corners are a tiny bit tattered, but nothing unusual. Please note that this book was published in...

Scanner feed using Rasberry Pi ?

I haven't played with DarkSnow yet at all, but I can give you a somewhat brute-force way of seeing what files DarkIce has open (which, hopefully, includes the config file that it reads). The command 'lsof' lists files (including library files, etc.) that a process has open, and 'grep' searches...

    Columbus Rebanding

Thanks! In retrospect, that's likely what I did when programming a friend's scanner (Pro-164?) and why I'm not hearing as much on the Win-500. Many thanks for the help!

    Columbus Rebanding

Can someone verify: When using Win500 to import the Frankly County Public Safety systems directly from RR, is there any need to tweak the trunking tables (i.e. due to rebanding), or should Win500 take care of that automatically? I'm not 100% sure I'm hearing all of the transmissions, and it's...

    System Trouble?

Once the fire is out, any chance you'd consider putting up a status page for the streaming platform? Just something simple so we can find out that it's not our individual feeds which are a problem (and then save me 15-20m of trying to figure out why my feed was hung up!).

City of Columbus rebanding in progress

I didn't realize they were going digital any time soon. I also have a digital-capable scanner, but it was nice having an entirely separate radio for Franklin County. Sadly, it looks like another generation of scanners is becoming obsoleted. And now with MARCS-IP, I wonder how much longer I...

City of Columbus rebanding in progress

I've used a Pro-97 in the past with the Columbus systems. This scanner does not natively support rebanding. From what I read, frequencies with a 0 in the fourth decimal place will not tune via trunking, so in the case of this specific system and scanner, two frequencies (853.45000, 853.77500)...

Need advice on compromise (i.e. stealth, low cost, etc.) HF antenna

When I was first planning, I thought about putting something in the attic, but shelved that idea because the attic isn't all that big. Given my DX contact last night with this 18' wire and counterpoise (~36' total), I'm rethinking that. All I have to do is get over my fear of falling through...

Need advice on compromise (i.e. stealth, low cost, etc.) HF antenna

Thanks for the suggestion, but as I'm in a condo, a flagpole isn't permitted (and even if it were, the cost would be too much for this cheap ham!).

Need advice on compromise (i.e. stealth, low cost, etc.) HF antenna

To follow-up, I ditched plan A (and plan B!). Instead of the welding wire (too springy, difficult to wind up), I found ~18' of 16awg speaker wire and split it into two strands going out the window, with one leg across to the tree (not pretty... ~15' horizontal and remaining 3' hanging down off...

Need advice on compromise (i.e. stealth, low cost, etc.) HF antenna

Well... I'm changing my strategy. I bought a 16' crappie pole at cabelas, going to mount it on a tripod leftover from a satellite dish install, going to wire it up with the welding wire I mentioned above, and make three or four radials off the bottom. I'm planning on getting 450ohm ladder line...

Need advice on compromise (i.e. stealth, low cost, etc.) HF antenna

Do you think any of these would perform better than what I've described above? My original intention was to build a Buddistick and put it up when I was using the rig. But I was hoping that the horizontal wire antenna, albeit a little short, might be better (with less noise) than a vertical...

Need advice on compromise (i.e. stealth, low cost, etc.) HF antenna

Yeah, 80m I thought might be pushing it... but I'm holding out hope for 40m. Should I then not bother with the copper pipe and focus solely on getting wire buried? If I do bury some wire, I'm not going to be able to follow the path of the wire above it. As for the neighbors, it'll be across a...

Need advice on compromise (i.e. stealth, low cost, etc.) HF antenna

Hi Folks, HF newbie here -- I've finally acquired a radio (IC-730) and getting ready to try 'er out, but I'm hoping to run my plan by some of you with more experience for your feedback. I'm on the 2nd floor of a condo and plan on running a long wire antenna out the window (which is ~12ft...

What is data heard on TV helicopter shots?

While I do hear what sounds like background noise in one channel, the other, much louder channel has the data, and it's definitely data -- take a look at the waveform zoomed in:

    Local RS scanner stock

Surely they can't be asking $425 for an old, analog-only Pro-97! I bought my floor model 97 for $70 about three or four years ago now in a Columbus store.

What is data heard on TV helicopter shots?

During coverage of today's plane crash, a live feed from a helicopter circling the crash site had some sort of data being sent on an audio channel. Check out this clip to hear what I'm talking about. I've heard this in the past when, for example, a local news reporter is talking over this when...

    USB power backup solution?

You're all talking about excellent hardware, but we're talking about a scanner that draws... what... 300ma, maybe? I don't have specs on internal power draw on these Belkin units, but remember that there's no inverter in these, so you're not going to have the inefficiency of a 120V output UPS...

    USB power backup solution?

I don't know exactly, but I'm pretty sure they use this with a 2wire 3600HGV "residential gateway". If you can find a listing of a power adapter for that, you'd probably be able to figure out what the jack is on the Belkin device.

    USB power backup solution?

Belkin makes a 12v output UPS, e.g. models BU3DC000-12V and BU3DC001-12V. See: Belkin USA Site. AT&T uses these for U-verse subscribers (data/voice/tv via DSL). Many use a 12v 7ah battery, so I'd imagine it'd run the scanner for quite a while. There are plenty available via eBay, but since...
